When YOU get a massage...

I just had a massage the other day. Before that....my last one was about 4 months ago (I know...bad girl! LOL). When I was filling out my questionaire for my massage four months ago....I decided to lie about my occupation. Just because I was there to relax and NOT talk about work. But afterwards....I felt bad. Well with the massage the other day they didn't even have me fill out a questionnaire but sometime during my massage...the therapist says "this beats being at work doesn't it?" I laughed and said "yes". Then he asks me what I do. I told him I was a massage therapist. He seemed surprised as if I should have told him. Then to my disgust, he started asking me questions about where I work and how long I've been a massage therapist etc. Again, I do not get massages enough and now when I'm all relaxed he starts talking to me about work!!I'm just curious how other MTs feel about this and what they do in the same situation.

When YOU get a massage...

If they start to ask questions, just say that you prefer not to talk about it at the moment. You are/were here to relax and do not wish to talk about work, nothing personal.

Most often I am trading so it's already known I am a MT.  Otherwise I don't say anything.  If they ask I just tell them I am retired.  Which is true so I don't feel any guilt about it.  When working on another MT I tend to give them a little extra attention to the areas they have requested emphasis on.

I have had people talk my ear off or complain about how they don't have the client base they would like, etc......I will never ever, never, ever tell another therapist I'm a MT! If however, they DO NOT give extra attention to an area I specified as a problem area, I do not return to them. It's a very interesting  MT world out there. :

I do not tell anyone what I do when I visit another day spa. When they ask what I do for a living I reply... Today I am a relaxing girl. Corney I know but they usually get the hint and when they don't  I tell them please work on my upper body more than the lower and if that dont do the trick I say I work in a day spa and am here to relax and work is the last thing I want to talk about. They usually dont ask any thing else and I get a pretty goog massage.

When YOU get a massage...

I typically tell a person I am a massage therapist and that does often start conversation. I find that answering questions with one word responses will relay the message that I'm not interested in talking about it (or saying "what" a whole bunch of times). I like to know what my clients do for a living...it gives me an idea about what their bodies might be going through so I figure it's common courtesy to let them know if they ask.

Ok Saddiedawn... You got me.. Now I'll be honest and tell them I guess your right. I do ask that same question also. So... your right it does help when giving a massage to know that information. Now I fell bad and rude. So to the two or three MT's. Please forgive me. Just please give me your best and I'll be back.

All through school, and until recently, I've been a part time bus driver.  So, that is what I put down, rather than MT.  Of course, when I trade, the secret is out.  A different question might be: do you offer feedback?
