Which chair to use-IHM

Hi there,
I'm just about to finish my IHM course and I would like to buy a
decent chair to use, I'd like to know what everyone else uses and what you
think is better

Hi Alli
All you need really is a basic chair, without arms and not too high a back.
I got mine from B&Q. cost me £9.99. It is metal frame with padded seat and back rest. Take a regular sized person along with you(i.e. not a 6'4" partner or 5' nothing friend) and get them to sit in the chair while you try out some moves on them. If they feel comfy and you can get to their back, it will be ok.

Remember to bear in mind the weight of the chair if you are going to be carrying it around!

I have found that a kneeling stool is excellent. It is very comfortable and clients I have practiced on have found it more comfortable than a a chair or stool, especially when I put a pillow on my massage couch and they lean against that. You get them from Argos and they are priced at £39.99. I sometimes use it when I am at my desk too. It has wheels so you can move it around easily too and it is height ajustable.

I use the kneeler from Argos as well. my clients have tried both ordinary chair and the kneeler they all prefer the kneeler. And when it hasn't got clients on it I use it at the computer, its very comfy

I use a wooden stool from IKEA most of the time, it's height adjustable as I like people to be higher up than a lot of the others. Cost less than a tenner.

My course tutor recommended a fold up directors chair but can you get thm in the middle of winter...[&:]

Just a few points,
Tam - doesn't a directors chair have arms? Won't the arms get in the way when you work on clients arms?

Angel and Soar - Do your clients not get a bit uncomfy sitting on a chair with no back? I don't think I could relax enough. Quite often my clients drift off, but I cannot see how they could in a chair with no back.

The stool is actually very very comfortable and becuase of the strange angle you sit at, you really don't need a back on it. When I do clients, I have the massage couch in front of them so they can lean on that if they need to.

My clients can choose to lie forward on a pillow while i massage back and shoulders and then sit up for the head neck and facial!!
They all prefer to sit up on the kneeler as it is so comfy. If they have come for a total "I want to doze off during this" they usually opt for a back ,shoulder and head lying on the couch. i always give them a choice

I have a very expensive physio type chair at the office and I really would prefer a kneeler as that is what I use at home as it is more comfy. pity they didn't ask me what i wanted to sit on I could have saved them £100s

Good question

Normally when I get to rotate the shoulders, they resume to a sitting up position. Most of then just rest against the couch rather than lean right over on to it, basically it is there for support more than to lie against.

By the time I get to the scalp they have their heads back a little, so when I move on to the face areas they are in the correst postion. I've never had to ask any one to "sit up" yet...(touch wood. lol)

Thanks, i was just curious because i have been using a backless chair with my clients rested against the couch as you suggest but i find at the end if i ask them for critical feedback because i have just done case studies they all say the treatment fantastic but didnt quite feel comfortable towards end of treatment as back did not feel supported and they felt they had to sit straight, even though i know these people well they did not feel they could tell me during the treatment so we could adjust there position....

may give the kneeler a go.

I am lucky and have an old dining chair which has a fairly low back, but I have been looking for a fold up chair to use for moble treatment. I found one in Staples for £13.99. It has a low padded back and a padded seat and is very comfortable.

Been wracking my brain as to which chair to use. Starting business in January and no ideal mobile IHM chair. Thanks to you I have just ordered the fold up one online from Staples - hope it's comfy (ie) won't force patients to use tummy muscles all the time to stay upright. Not expressing myself properly but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Dear Alli,
I use what ever chair is avalible. Often, when I go to peoples houses, I use what they have.
At home I use on of those ergonomic kneelers, which I also use for typing. I find it help with the clients posture, becuase they are more aware of their back and their position in space.

Whatever chair you use will have it's advantages and disadvantages. If you are doing mobile, then a cheap fold up picnic chair is as good as anything else. In offices, use one of their typists chairs with a low back. I dont think it matters if the chair has arms or not. My advice would be though, to choose a chair that is lower rather than higher ie so that you do not need to raise your arms above mid chest height when massaging the head. Otherwise you will find that it gets painful just beween your shoulder blades, expecially after you have done a few people.
