Firstly going to start this thread with a little apology, and that is quite simply not only am I a useless photographer but also after spending a hour and a half in the bar with FREE beers, by the time I made it down to the restaurant I forgot I was taking a few pics for the forum, so only got a few early on. Okay I’ll try to put up a few more next time I go, as they have stupidly invited me back to the official opening night party in January.
The White Box Restaurant is at the end of Kalim Bay, they have redeveloped the White Box designer home, its General Manager is a nice French guy called Marc, who happens to live on the Hills (see all the best people end up in the retirement homes!!), he previously managed the Red Room at Cherng Talay.
It is on three floors, top floor is a bar where they also serve a Tapas bar snack menu, I’ve tried to attach a picture of this, yes I know it’s sideways but heck all you have to do is pick up your screen and turn it, to see it the right way up!! They will have DJ’s and live bands here every so often and the views from the open air bar are spectacular across to Patong bay.
Second floor is an inside and an open air outside restaurant and kitchen, everything is similar décor to the bar, all white leather and chrome, sorry no pics forgot by that seforum.xxxe. Prices are top end, I had a rib steak, it was huge, very succulent and possibly the best I’ve had on the island since coming here. Think if I’d paid for it then it was 1250 bahts, so top end price here but still reasonable for you holidaymaker guys on visa budgets wanting to impress or enjoy a good meal.
Ground floor is the wine cellar, really illuminated chromey cabinets, all sunk into the rock and cooled to some cold temperature, can’t remember what temperature as was too busy looking at their VIP room. This is a brilliant idea. Good sized room with large flat screen tv, table to seat up to 12 guests, all private with an open air balcony over the crashing waves, cost to hire this room for your special private party, 10% on the bill??? How good is that???
Oh yeah, why was I invited, Marc wanted to have a few friends at the restaurant pre official opening to test run his staff etc, he generously offered free drink and food for me and my friends to come along for the evening to pass on my pearls of wisdom re improvements or comments.
My overall comments are, this restaurant will make a fortune for them, it has the perfect setting, has been furnished to the highest standards. Has all the little extra stuff I could never think of, really nice beer glasses, food is always presented well, on large white plates with another sectional plate for sauces or special mustards etc, even their ashtrays are provided by Moet & Chandon and really nice to flick your ciggy into.
Only complaint stems from my ignorance, didn’t order half the stuff on the tapas menu because I didn’t know what it was!!! Gressini? Tapenade? Golden bags (thought this might have something to do with the Beckhams?) and this was only on the tapas bar snack menu, it got seriously worse on the main menu, my ignorance was well in overdrive by that time, so went for a good old ‘Joe Blake’, even got the best steak knives I’ve ever seen, huge stainless steel devilish knives that make you want to start a circus act with scantily clad girls, balloons and spinning wheels of death, unluckily when I was leaving they managed to prise it from my sticky little mits, so another promising career path thwarted!! Good wine selection, we ordered a couple of bottles of a Chilean Red, forgot its name but it was really nice, better still it had that extra nice after taste only truly represented and fully appreciated in FREE bottles of the stuff!!!
Pic 1 – Goong Sarong, prawn with a dip from the tapas menu (tuna dish in background)
Pic 2 – Oysters, these were gorgeous, a must, no idea where they are on the tapas menu?
Pic 3 – the tapas bar
Pic 4 – tapas bar seating (note Patong in the background)
Pic 5 – Tapas Bar menu (sideways on a bit)
Had a few more pictures on my camera, but sadly these were even more out of focus and from worse angles, but its there fault for filling up my beer glass before I could get anywhere near finishing it and making me loose control of my alcohol intake!! Oh well always next time.
And for all those people I asked to come to a free evening at one of Patong best and more expensive restaurants – Ollie, June, Gee, Duncan, Shaun, Sefton & Bee, your big time loss, being a bit tired was the worse decision you made this year and sorry Nicke was wanting to ask you and Ead to come, especially as it was bar closed night but by then I had invited about 16 people and Gee told me it was too many, shame as half of them didn’t come, 555555555555555!!! Khee Neows delight!!
