Congrats on the new opportunity. I currently work pt at two spas. One is busy and I always come away with 3-4 massages in a 5 hour shift. There I work Wed 2-8 and Sun 11-5. I am not thrilled about working Sundays but will do it for awhile. The other I'm on call Tue, Thur and Fri all day. That hasn't panned out and I am doing some serious reconsidering. That one is kinda the same as you are leaving. Not putting any money or time into advertising. I like the owner also but its coming down to whats best for me and my family and I know I can do better elsewhere. I am trying to hold out till Feb to make a drastic move. We will see how that goes. I don't think there is anything wrong with shortining your time to what is more convenient for you to honor those gcs. Sounds like you will be available some daytime, eve and weekend time. That covers it all. Maybe you won't have to give back any $ if people just schedule right. Anyways sounds like you are heading in the direction you want. That gives me hope I too will find the right place/balance.

The place you are working at sounds like the salon I used to work at. It was a 60/40 split. They did the booking and provided the space (and utitlies), but very little marketing other than including the word massage in the telephone book ads they did. I provided the oils, linens, music etc.
My availability there was:
8 am to 5 PM Monday, Wednesday and Friday
8 am to 4 PM Tuesday and Thursday
8 am to 12 Noon Saturday
I quit working there about 3 years ago.

After nearly 3 years of providing mobile (outcall) service only, I took a job in a brand new spa in town. Although I was asked to be available for work scheduling on Mon/Wed/Friday 9-5, Tues/Thurs 10-6:30, and Saturday 9-3.

I have been scheduled to work 2 days per week so far, because they have 3 other MTs on staff as well. This spa opened Nov. 25th however, so I am trying to be patient and wait for the GCs to start being redeemed.
I live in a tourist area and this is our "slow season" as well. :roll:
They have me "oncall" 2 days per week and I must be there within 45 minutes. On days which I am not officially on call, I can still be "requested"... but then they have to give me more notice.

I'm going to be the voice of caution. Pookariah, I truly hope this new place is all it promises to be. Objectively, just reading the numbers, I don't see how it's possible for a business to make a profit if they're covering all expenses including $2500 in advertising & then only taking 10% commission on your massages. The math just doesn't add up, which makes me question the truth behind the promises. Hopefully, I'm wrong. I don't want to be a downer! Just be careful about what you sign/promise in return.

Yeah, I agree. A 90/10 split sounds too good to be true. How much do they charge for an hour??

The spa owner takes 40% of my earnings.

Or, another way to look at is is you take 60% of the spa owners; revenue. I detect a very strong Us vs. Them bias in your choice of words which is a red flag - I don't think you will ever be happy working for someone other than yourself if you think 100% of massage revenue are your earnings.

I've decided that I need to work where I have a little more support with marketing to save my sanity.

You really should open your own business and see how much you are willing to spend to save the sanity of your therapists

First thing you do at your new job is increase your withholding deductions so you have YOUR money sitting in your bank account, instead of giving it blindly to the IRS to put in their bank account. Then you will never have to worry about needing GC cash flow to live off of. It's YOUR money. The Government only takes what you are willing to give them. The concept of a windfall tax refund is the biggest scam perpetuated on the American public.

The others are right. The math does not smell right.

If they have 4 technicians, all meeting their goal of 15 per week each, that works out to $10 per appointment in marketing costs to help you meet your goal. Even at a 60/40 split for those first 15, most businesses would be hard pressed to make any money spending that much on advertising. And then they give away all their profits on >15 massages with the 90 /10 split.

i'm with the rest here...they are paying you 90% when you reach 15 clients in a week? heck, i want to get a job there! that's crazy. i can't imagine any place paying you that kind of money. at that rate, they'll be losing money to have people working there. i'm with relax&rejuv. in that you should give the g/c $ back now and leave clean. and yes, up your withholding deduction so they take less money out of your check.
