why does my cat do this massaging thing?

i have a new cat and he sometimes somewhat massages me with his paws, what is he doing why is he doing that?

It's called kneading. It's comforting to a cat... kittens often do this to their mothers to stimulate milk production.

its commonly known as 'kneading' as in kneading dough. its a sign of affection, it means your cat likes you and likes having you around them.

When your cat was just a tiny kitten he would knead his mother to signal he wanted to nurse. When a cat does it to a human it's a sign of affection. He's just telling you he loves you.

When a cat is a kitten, he kneads his mother's tummy to stimulate the production of milk when he's nursing. At the times he's nursing, he feels very happy and secure, getting his tummy filled and being snuggled up close to mom. So he learns to associate the action (kneading) with the feeling (happiness and security). As he gets older, he repeats the behavior on people he loves in order to reproduce that feeling. So you should feel lucky that he's doing this to you -- it means he loves you and he feels happy and safe with you.
