why was the grey squirrel introduced into the UK?

I know, or believe that the grey squirrel was introduced in Victorian times, but why?

They where not introduced.

They got brought over by travellers of the seas and private collectors. They would escape, let loose deliberate or stolen by animal activists to set free from captivity. They only where released form one area then others got released in other areas and it has taken 100 years for these small areas to grow and spread. I think originally there where 3 areas reported in the Victorian era.
