The City of Wichita has adopted a new ordinance regarding businesses that offer massage therapy.
Captain Kevin Mears with the Wichita Police Department says the new ordinance will help them deal with the problem of illegal massage businesses used as fronts for prostitution and human trafficking.
"They're using people under the disguise of a legal business to conduct sex-for-hires," said Captain Mears.
Mears says Kansas is one of only four states that do not have some type of law to regulate the industry.
He says the number of investigations and arrests in Wichita for human trafficking or sex for hire in businesses nearly doubled between 2014 and 2015.
Mears says there are a number of legitimate massage businesses in Wichita.
"We work very closely with the therapists in the industry to make sure that we do not hurt legitimate practitioners and therapists."
