A suspect smashed through a cellar window of The Massage School in Easthampton early Monday morning in search of cash, prompting a significant but as yet unsuccessful police response.
The owner of the business, located at 1 Northampton Road, called police to the scene around 8 a.m. after receiving text notifications of an in-progress break-in from his security system.
Police quickly responded, but showed up a hair too late, said Easthampton Police Officer Chad Alexander.
It's not yet known whether the suspect made off with any cash, but the door to the office containing cash was forced. The suspect seemed to know exactly the place money was kept, added Alexander.
"The fact that we didn't find any spots where entry was forced except right by where the office where the money was kept indicates he may have been a client or somebody who knows an employee there," he said. "We think he had an idea of where the money was kept."
The suspect gained entry to the office using what police believe to be a crowbar, Alexander said, basing the observation on surveillance footage.
Alexander said the suspect is a white male with dark hair wearing a sweatshirt and tan pants.
The investigation is in the preliminary stages and detectives were fingerprinting the space around 10 a.m. with plans to continue working at the scene for several more hours. Anyone with information concerning the break-in is asked to contact Easthampton police at 413-527-1212.
This is a developing story. Additional information will be posted as soon as it is available.
