Women: an endangered species???

Interesting article discussing how many women are choosing not to reproduce all over the glode resulting in a gradual decline in their numbers. Not to worry though, I doubt the human race will be around that long anyways....

Don't worry about any pending apocalypse, Canada is due to become extinct in a few thousand years. The Economist reports this week falling fertility rates around the world spell doom for many countries as the single life appeals to more women than replacing themselves through children.
Women in the wealthier parts of Asia, for example, are literally on a "marriage strike" leading to a drop in birth rates.
The United Nations reports women in 83 countries and territories around the globe won't have enough daughters to replace themselves unless fertility rates suddenly rise.
Using Hong Kong as an example, 1,000 women there are expected to give birth to 547 daughters. Those daughters would in turn be succeeded by only 299 daughters and so on.
At that rate, Hong Kong's female population would shrink from 3.75 million to just one in 25 generations. The last female would be born in 2798.
If you apply that theory to Japan, Germany, Russia, Italy and Spain, their populations won't last out the millennium.
Canada's last woman, using current statistics, would be born sometime around 4400. We fare better than most countries except Brazil, which will see its last woman born close to 5000.
And, China isn't about to save the world from eventual declining fertility rates either. Using the same UN population figures, it has a mere 1,500 years left before it too can't replace its women.

Anyway, the best thing to happen to the planet would be the extinction of all humans so this would be good news in my opinion.

As for men declining at the same rate as women, not necessarily so. You see, while a woman can only reproduce once every 10 months, a man can reproduce (on average) of 700 times a year. So the odds are that he'll "replace" himself at least once or twice in his lifetime. Yet if women don't "replace" themselves, then they'll eventually die off.

I think in China's case, aren't they totally against having female babies due to the dowry etc? I think when a woman finds out she's having a girl, she is prone to abort the baby....I also seem to recall they are having problems now with not enough women to match up with all the boys.....I'll see if I can dig up the article on that.....

Women will reproduce a male or female at a ratio of roughly 1:1, no matter how often it is done.

Men will also reproduce a male or female at the same ratio, even if done more often.

You're right about China aborting more girls, but won't this mean that girls will become more valuable in the future because of their scarcity? This could change how couples feel about having a girl. Markets have a way of correcting themselves.

Actually not in china's case since even if women are scarce, there is still the issue of dowry. I mean hell, they slaughter animals for various potions that have no medicinal value whatsoever. They're not the most logical of societies.....

as for the ratio between male or female births, that 1:1 ratio isn't exactly correct.

Do a search, here's one article that states for the past 63 yrs, more boys were born in the US than girls.

There's another article that states that 51% of births are male. Therefore eventually, the quantity of female births will continually diminish.

For eg: 100 births (keep the numbers small)
51 Males
49 females
of those 49 females (giving that all will reproduce)
Only 24 will be female
of those 24 (giving that all will reproduce)
Only 11 will be female
of those 11 (giving that all will reproduce)
only 5 females.

So in 4 generations, that would be about 89 females compared to 95 males. Now if the trend continues, the statement is true. Eventually, women will become extinct (before males). Probably why they said it'll be about 2000 yrs in Canada before this happens.

Now add to that (as in the article) how many women are choosing not to reproduce. That just compounds the problem. But then to solve the problem you just have to make more trailer parks because we all know that women in trailer parks reproduce at an exponential rate lol.....

Since there is an approximately 50:50 chance of any birth producing a female offspring, why do you figure that women will die off? I'm no statistician but it seems to me that there will always be plenty of women. Plus, women tend to live longer than men so their numbers should stay a little higher than men. There's something in your logic that just doesn't seem right...though I'm too lazy to figure it out.
