Working in sports massage

I've spent much of my training in sports massage and related applicable modalities. However right now I'm just working in a massage clinic, which is fine except that I'd like to be doing more sports related work. Does anyone have any helpful hints or ideas about getting in with professional sports teams or something similar? Any advice would be great!

What about volunteering with sports groups? Offering your time for marathons, races, and other amateur events? I spent a couple of days working with one of the NHL farm teams showing the kids how massage can help their performance. They don't have the money to hire one, but gave me some great exposure. Here we have something called the running room, and I know several therapists who do seminars on training, stretching and massage.

Try to make connections with teams that are in your area. I suspect starting with the amateurs, and working your way up to the professionals, will be a great way to start. See if you can some how help out olympic athletes, they often don't have a lot of money, I know a couple of MT's who have been able to work with a few Olympians.

It will probably be a lot of hard work, but I'm sure will be more than worth it.

What part of Michigan are you in?

Do you want to work with just professionals or your weekend warrior too?

My practice is pretty much founded on athletes of all ability levels. I have found that working with professionals is hard to get in with but once you're in you are golden. The athletes don't make the decisions, their coaches and agents make the decisions. That being said, you need to make sure you are marketing the person that can decide whether they come to you or not.

Marketing the other types of sports people is a matter of getting connected with the clubs they are apart of and the places they go. Advertise in sports shops and go to events to meet people. Prove to them you are the best person to handle their problems and you will be golden.

Sounds simple but it is true. Athletes want someone who knows what they are talking about and once they find you they will tell all their training partners.
