A couple vacations ago, we were checking in @ the hotel. The clerk took one look at my business credit card, grabbed her neck, and asked if I was there for the week for work! A couple behind us asked the same lol It sounds like a good idea financially, but I like the idea of NOT working for a few days. I need to recharge my batteries, regroup. Its not really a vaction if you're working! Even though we LOVE what we do, we need a break, too :}

There's no such thing as a new idea

I've too have been thinking of a working holiday to get me away from the rain in England. I think there are lots of potential working vacation opportunites out there. I met a massage therapist last year who said she used to work for a few weeks in resorts in the USA. Another option could be to offer your services as a therapist on an organised retreat. In England there is a company who run spa retreat holidays abroad. For each trip there are about 20 guests and the are joined by a nutritionist, a chef, personal trainers, a yoga teacher and massage therapists.

The author is a hypnotherapist who is a visiting consultant hypnotherapist at Chiva Som in Thailand. She also teaches in Malta and in the UK.

Now where do I fancy having a working vacation holiday? Hawaii, Mexico, Arizona...

GrateLakes, I think that's a great idea. Earlier in the beginning of summer, I found a listing on Craigslist for a massage position in Petoskey, and forwarded it to a younger friend of mine from massage school. She didn't do it, but it sounded great to me. Wouldn't work for me -- three dogs, a husband, and a day job... but oooooohhhhh, sounded heavenly. Maybe in my next, single, dog-free life.
Incidentally, my husband and I went to Mackinac last fall, and had a great time. We stayed in the city, and took the ferry over. We then drove up to the UP and stayed in Paradise for a couple of days. We'd like to go again this year, and try to make it as far north as Copper Harbor. I've heard it's amazing there, but I've never been.

Did you ride your bikes around the island? That's my favorite thing to do there... besides becoming an unabashed Fudgie for a few days.

I wouldn't think so.

There are still several states that do not require licensing, though - so I think there are ways to do this.

I've thought of doing this, but rather than going to one place and being an IC for a week, I thought about traveling to several places to work with friends and/or at relatives homes, doing just 1-2 massages in each place. You know......money to get to & through the next stop, see a bit of the country, visit some folks and come home breaking even. Not a true vacation, but fun anyway!

Oh, for sure, definitely ways to do it. There is no licensing required in Michigan yet, as a matter of fact. I was thinking that in addtion to Mackinac, Traverse City would be one to look into.

I also think Vermont does not require licensing. I lived in VT for four years... now that's a nice place to go in the summertime (or winter, for that matter -- skiing, anyone?). Plenty of resorts to look into, there.

Great idea, but I don't think it would be a "vacation" anymore, as much as a vacation AWAY from you personal practice.

I have been throwing around the idea for some time now about how I will make the transition if we ever get the opportunity to move to a very small city that I like. Of course I have always been looking ahead by years (in this case about 15 years future), but I'd like to be able to transition in such a way that I go "live" in the new town about three days a week and "do massage in the new town" two of the days, for about three to five years time. The other portion of the week I would travel back to the city I currently live in and work in my office, slowly phasing my office out of practice.

I know it is a long way away and so much can happen along the years - but you have to know I have "known" what I was going to do professionally-wise since I was in 4th grade. Now I am 40 and basically doing what I planned and a little more. I think I am an old soul or something. *chuckles*

Well, anyway, that's what I want to do someday. Don't know how it will all pan out, but I bet this thread will give me more ideas.
