David Meggett Has Been Sentenced To 30 Years For Criminal Sexual Misconduct
The former NFL player will be serving a 30 year sentence for his history of sexual assault
Athens, GA 11/12/2010 06:38 PM GMT (TransWorldNews)
Former NFL Running Back David Meggett has been convicted of criminal sexual conduct and burglary, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Wednesday. Meggett was charged after an incident involving a 21 year-old college student in her home in Charleston, South Carolina.
Beattie Butler of the Charleston County Public Defender's Office claims that Meggett and the young woman had consensual sex and then later, an argument which resulted in Meggett's arrest. However, Meggett has a history of arrest for sexual assault- in 1998 he was arrested in Toronto, Canada for the alleged assault of an escort. In April 2000, that trial ended with the jury unable to reach a consensus.
When Meggett later worked for the city of Robersonville, N.C as the Parks and Recreation Director, he resigned after being accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend at the time. Meggett was later convicted of misdemeanor sexual battery in 2007, and was given probation. He was allowed to move back to South Carolina, where he'd attended High School in North Charleston, to serve his probation, where the latest incident took place.
Between 1989 and 1998, Meggett played for three NFL teams, the New York Jets, the New York Giants, and the New England Patriots. He spent six years with the Giants, three with the Jets, and one with the Patriots before leaving the league in 1998. He's got the record for second most punt return yards in the entire league, having amassed 3,708 in the ten years he played for the NFL.
