I completely agree with the J-comment, but I don't really see what's wrong with 'chick'. I actually say that all the time, usually when I'm talking about a good-looking girl or a good friend... like "she's SUCH a hot chick!!"

Sure saying "jap" is definately not nice and I'm sure most normal people
would prefer Japan girl or japanese. Saying Japanese is not being politically
correct it's just being polite and respectful.
And that is what it's all about IMHO.

The word "chick" I also agree is not a denegrating word, it's been used
since I can remember, and like Alex said she uses it as well.
First time I've ever heard someone get their knickers in a knot about the
word "chick" !
