Auston Matthews is now stuck on 47 goals with 12 games left to play in his fourth season in the NHL before the league was shutdown. He was on pace to break the Leaf's record of 54 set by Rick Vaive.
What's so remarkable about his scoring pace is that 77% of his goals was scored playing 5 on 5. Naturally it's harder to score when playing 5 on 5, than on the power play. In fact, since entering the league, Matthews has scored more goals while playing even strength than any other player. His main competition in the goals list, is Ovechkin and Pasta, who have scored far fewer goals at even strength, with more minutes played per game, than Matthews.
Not only that, but Matthews is doing it when scoring is down from years past. Tighter and more structured defense, bigger goalies and bigger goalie padding is making it harder to score nowadays.
This in itself proves Matthews is the greatest goal scorer in the 102 year history of the Leafs.
