Annoying flower sellers

MrDK this is something which I feel I could do and would like more details of your experience and involvement in this.

Do you have personal experience of the centre?

Is it well run/supported?

Will all of my sponsorship go to the child's benifit (or will someone be taking tea money?)

etc.

I would be happy if you would PM me more details or perhaps if possible, start a thread on this matter?

A couple of quick answers, and will get the rest of the info in a PM to you.
I have visited the center 4 times and with much help from members of this board brought them food and supplies, with no expenses at all.
The center is run by a Pastor Fred and his wife Dianne, both from Canada and a handful of others from Canada, Great Britain and the Philippines.
Everyone involved in the center are volunteers, with the exception of the Thai employees. No tea money as far as I can gauge.
The sponsorships are 100% to the children and the actual amounts are calculated to the exact baht. IIRC the annual sponsorship for a boy is 3260 baht and for a girl a couple of hundred baht more due to the difference in price for the uniforms.

If you go to Pattaya, you should take a couple of hours out of your schedule to go visit.
They much like visitors and it will give you a opportunity to play with the kids if you like.
If you find yourself in Phuket, it should be equally easy to find a good center to support.

I don't mind the flower kids, the one in Patong I have known for over 15 years and she remembers me everytime I'm in Patong because I don't treat her like rubbish. I treat her with the respect every person/child deserves. I might buy flowers from her once every couple of days and then just give the flowers back to her and to see the smile on her face if well worth the baht spent.

I do agree with Tobben30 and find that the flower kids in Karon can be quite pushy as well as the hawkers selling the hats and frogs. But at the end of the day we are talking a $ or 2. Who really cares.

If you say that's what's going on inside the bars, so be it, but I was talking about outside on the street, Bangla Road in particular. I don't think I've ever seen any of these people go up to another Thai person and ask for money - only to the foreigners, same as all the other people out on Bangla trying to get some $$$$ from all the "rich" foreigners.

Lots come by the offshore and try the 'I will keep on wailing until you pay me' extortion which they dont do at other (dare I point out Thai owned) bars..

Also the blind guy managed to never put a foot out of place over very uneven pavement and ground.. Even managed to change step to step over a few bits of left over rebar without even making a foot wrong :whistle:

Nothing wrong with the flower girls. No different than most nite spots around the world and as others have said. A smile and a shake of the head is enough for them to move on.

What gives me the sh.its are the women with the funny hats and all the trinkets. They nudge you while u r busy talking to someone. And when a newby or tourists are in the bar and have a quick look at what they have to sell the Bar is soon flooded with their mates selling much the same crap and they get in the way and distract me from my job at hand.

Next time I see a flower lady beating her kid I will start cheering and clapping asking for more. (she probably wouldn't notice anyway)
Maybe take a movie of the beating and show it in the bar when she comes in... too bad my camera is broken.

You may not SEE them going up to Thais but I've often seen Thais stop and give to beggars...the women on the pavements with babies; the ones with missing limbs etc...

I have seen the same sort of thing and am quite suspect of the whole performance!!!
I gave over some money the first time I came across one, but when I saw him walk over and around obsticles that would have had me flat on my back, I never donated again!!!!
