any advice re house visits where there are smokers

cos... when i was their age, i knew nothing of the dangers of smoking. kids now are far more aware of the implications of smoking and, seeing their dad coughing and spluttering has put them off... they themselves dont cough and splutter.

but we are going off topic and into the realms of smoking Vs non smoking... its been done before and the stats or on HP to prove it!

maybe i am insensitive to smoking as such. i have friends that smoke and it doesnt bother me to be around them... i'd rather be around them than not just cos they smoke. i go to their houses, i dont notice the smoke, i dont stink when i leave. i DO find pubs and clubs more pleasant now but a nuisance if i am with a smoker cos they have to go off for a fag... and in some places you cant take your drink outside, so you leave it unattended!! whats that about after all the date rape stuff ( i think i'm safe on that count!)

so, no i wouldnt dictate to a client or a workman, unless said workman was doing a detrimental job and flicking fagash everywhere.

The reason I mentioned addiction in my first post is because Im an addiction worker and I do have personal views on cannabis and decriminalisation which I have mentioned elsewhere but professionally, I would be unable to visit a house where someone had been smoking cannabis as I said, I have known of and of more than one occasion where people have had the police turn up at the door for a routine matter, found evidence that people had been smoking cannabis and hauled everyone down to the police station for questioning.
Thats not something I want to go through by default.
Also, the point you make about smoking cannabis for pain relief not making someone an addict. I cant say yes or no to that as every person is different.
However, if someone has a need for a substance and cannot do without it, whether it be psychologically or physically, they could be addicted even if they dont fall into the traditional model of your stereotypical addict.
As it stands cannabis is still illegal in this country and while it is, as I said, I wouldnt be able to treat someone if they had cannabis in their property at the time of the treatment.
As for smoking, my mum smoked for 35 years, she never smoked while she was pregnant with me or my brother, she gave up five years ago and she hasnt smoked since.
Im very proud of her for giving up but I know loads of people who smoke who like it and have no intention of kicking the habit.
However, Im sure if someone really wanted a therapy, they could abstain from smoking for an hour beforehand and while the therapist was there.

It's nice to see how we smokers have become the scum of the earth since the ban. Let's ignore the wars over religion and those who commit muder and rape - us smokers are the real outlaws!

I never said that smokers were the scum of the earth, I think they are your own words, so please don't imply that that is what I am saying. I know many smokers who are wonderful people. However the majority always make an effort not to smoke around their children as they know what harm it can do them. I don't have a problem with people wanting to smoke, as long as it's not inflicted upon me.

I'm just making the point that why should smoking ... a known killer ... be permitted to be inflicted upon children, against their own will, whereas other things that harm children are seen as criminal offences. Why should smoking be seen as OK to inflict upon children?

My advice is do what you are comfortable with, and be honest. If you dogs and cats make you ill, tell clients you are sorry you can't work with them, and refer them on. If smoking offends you - then don't put yourself where you can be offended. If you don't like the smell of people, then refer them on!

Personally, I try and work with people where they are, and try not to apply my values to them, unless I find it impossible. If I work somewhere where I come out smelly be it smoke, dog, cat, baby, (or even worse perfume! ), I keep back a change of clothers in the car or schedule it to be the last visit of the day.

I dont think I am trying to impose my "values" on other people it was a simple question as to handle what I have found to be an awkward situation
and one I have only recently come accross!
