Anyone know about voluntary regulation with the Aromatherapy Council

I totally agree with you.

Don't worry about the pressure being put on you to join the AC.

Not Needed! Do Not Panic. As a fully insured aromatherapist you are fully entitled to practice this wonderful Holistic Therapy within the NHS, and Private Clinics, as many do and will continue to do so without belonging to the AC Register. The quality of your work and your total commitment to your clients/patients is important.

Remember your qualification only means that you have passed a course; it does not necessarily make you a Excellent Holistic Therapist. Those of you that are Holistic Therapists will understand when I say: Healing Hands, Warm Heart, Attunement and Empathy. These cannot be taught but are a part of our very soul. (Not in NOS)

There will be no legislation requirement for you to join the AC. The whole idea is Voluntary Self Regulation.

The VTCT have just announced bridging courses to upgrade sufficiently to join the Voluntary register (although they say 'in a limited capacity'). Ask your college where you trained.

I'm annoyed at the VTCT for not being more proactive with all of this. Why was I enrolled on a course last year which was, according to their log book, practitioner level and met with the NOS, yet now I'm finding that it's not up to AC standards which the VTCT must have been privy to??? In effect I've been sold something whcih was 'not fit for the purpose'. Wonder whether I can sue them under the Sale of Goods Act?[sm=angry-smiley-035.gif]

while I understand that this is VOLUNTARY registration I am guessing that somewhere down the line it could become compulsory and I am wondering about Beauty Therapists who offer aromatherapy in salons and while I understand that some beauty therapists complete lengthy courses some are qualified & insured having completed distance aroma courses to use with their massage and some have have completed short 5 day beauty diploma courses in aromatherapyand got insured

Are they being encouraged to join the VR - how are they being informed as the beauty industry is their prime business as opposed to therapy?

I have to agree that as a student it is very difficult to know which courses to choose eg ITEC, VTCT or in the case of aromatherapy, IFA. Plus there seem to be so many different governing bodies. Anyone have any ideas on which on is best? Or where to get insurance?

it is hard to say who is the best but the other factor is what course is available where and when

I originally enrolled at the same college where I had studied Holistic massage (ITEC)
but when it came to the course they could not get a tutor so the course was cancelled appx 4 weeks after it should have started which meant I was too late to enrol anywhere else

rather than wait another year and take the chance that they would actually have a tutor this time I found an ITEC course at Middlesex School of Complementary Medicine in Stanmore and was very lucky to have a fantastic Tutor who taught us above and beyond the sylabus.

Because we only did 40 case studies I am not eligable to join the IFA or the IFPA unless I do another course which I am not prepared to do. I do however regulary take workshops beyond the need for CPD's because I do want to improve myself and learn more about the use of essentail oils in the areas that I am interested in ie pregnancy.

did you also know that there is going to be a change in legislation next year invalidiating some of the workshops out there, meaning that you will need to hold a diploma for massage in pregnancy, aromatherapy in pregnancy, aromatherapy in cancer care, reflexology in cancer care and pregnancy

all in all, more courses ho hum

MSCM are setting up the courses at the moment but I dont know who is setting the new legislation

I would ordinarily be suspicious but I trust the integrity of MSCM and have also heard about this from another therapist who has heard about this but I cant remember where she got the info from (all I can say is that it was not from MSCM)

I should actually qualify, I am actually quite pleased about the pregnancy massage course because I have been looking for one for ages. I was just about to book the
suzanne yates course in London which I was not looking forward to (going up to London that is) MSCM are just down the road from me so that is actually a bonus
the cost is roughly the same and the Tutor is excellent
so bonus for me
