Bars operating on a knife-edge

I took a walk (patrol!) around Bangla last night. In Soi Seapearl, I counted 6 bars that were open 7 days ago, but were now up for sale/rent. A bar-owner told me to come back in another 7 days and I will be able to count another 6 bars that will be closed.

In soi Gonzo at 11pm I counted 5 customers in the whole soi!

Soi Tiger, Eric and Lion were still busy, but not as busy as they should be in high season.

In general, everything looks very bleak for bar-owners. And this downturn is expected to get even worse

I agree if a bar owner shouts you a sang som (at a cost of 20, 30 baht to him) expecting you to shout him a 120 baht drink in his bar is a cheek, then again there are bar owners I buy drinks for in rounds as they are generous to me, I know I often mention it but Offshore is great with its regulars, every couple of drinks they throw me a free 'bonus' drink and with cans of import blackthorn thats a slice of thier profit I know. So in special places where I know the owner well then I would anyway simply as I would with any mates.

The flip side is if drinking in rounds and someone has crocodile arms (as paulie put it ) we all know the type, I will also call them out, dont site and take 4 or 5 drinks of a group of guys but not be prrrared to shout a round yourself. Bad form and I am not polite enough not to tell em !!

All my gf's friends in Patong complained about falang only look, no pay or want to pay less. Girls in BKK and Pattaya also told me that there were much less people this year.

Agree with Nicke, as per my earlier post, the worlds financial state is not going to be fixed/get better in the short term, so the next 2 years will be difficult, and then some.

The problem being that if you need to generate an income in the country in which you live (ie Thailand) then your options are few because Phuket is purely tourist $ driven.

Being the "best of the best" is the only solution and the bar owners who really work at it and provide that "bit extra" should come thru ok. As an example the owner of my favourite bar (outside of MTB), rings the bell about 5 times a night, is ever present to greet friends and new cutomers alike (even when he gets sick he still turns up), ensures he remembers names and is not afraid to buy a round or three and not expect one in return.

Nicke also works hard at his business, so the solution is there, but it needs to have been an ongoing thing in order to make it work, not something one puts in place now......that will be too late.
