Don't blame the university 'Venetian', just blame me. All UCL does is give me the
freedom of speech to give my views (and unlike just about everyone else here,
I have the courage to do it under my real name).
I'd maintain, though, that it is positive emotion that makes me spend
time on it, not negative. The big drug companies are often criticised for bad
behaviour and big profits, and some (not all) of this criticism is, sadly, right (and
it is documented on my web site too).
What does not seem to be mentioned so much here is that the
new age, alternative medicine and 'supplement' industries are also vast big-business
enterprises, which also makes huge profits. And unlike the conventional
drug business, they have little regulation, tiny production costs, near-zero
research costs, and no obligation whatsoever to show that their products work.
These people really know how to make money. That sort of profiteering and
exploitation of the vulnerable and the gullible for enormous profit does,
I'm afraid, raise some quite positive emotions in me.
People who claim to be able to cure AIDS with herbs, or cancer with coffee enemas
(for a suitable large fee) make be clever businesmen/women, but their exploitation of the
desparate seems to me to be not commendable.
