I have a friend who would like to study acupuncture but is not able to go to university due to financial constraints. I have found an acupuncture course at BodyHarmonics for her.

Anybody studied there and what was it like?

Is the course thorough on needling?

Is it difficult to practise once qualified?

I begin with Maria at Bodyharmonics in 4 weeks (acupuncture) i have numerous collegues who have completed the training and it is very extensive. I have spent 4 years training in various other systems that BH offer and find it a very warming experience to train there.

Maria is the leading exponent of chinese medicine in this country and her systems are very effective.

From what I can see, the concept of the Bodyharmonics acupuncture course is a post-grad training for orthodox and advanced complementary practitioners. Does your friend have a background in healthcare? A graduate from a 3 year university degree doesn't make them more effective than a vocational diploma, degrees are filled with other stuff! The thing about Traditional Chinese Medicine is that it's a life time study. There is always more to learn and TCM is still evolving, as any valid healthcare system should be.

Over the years I have heard good and not so good comments about the Bodyharmonices Centre. All I can say is that training courses I have done at BH have extensive enough to provide quality treatments to my clients and has helped me develop a successful practice. The attitude of the BH staff is you can go out there and do it, be successful, and have the same confidence as other healthcare professionals!

Hi Reiki and Indo,

Is the acupuncture course thorough enough to give confidence to practice and diagnose successfully? I am assuming the case studies are not supervised (maria watching while you needle) so how do you know you are putting the needle in the correct place?

Also, how many points do you learn?

Anyone have any idea when regulation of acupuncture comes into force? 2012?

Maria has been teaching acupuncture for over 10 years now, so i would like to think that her courses are well managed.

As for competing with other bodies, the regulations will sort that out too

When I spoke to Maria a few months ago about such issues, she said that BH graduates would be on any new state register. Any new legisation will grand parent even medics who have only done a few days of acupuncture training for pain relief.

As for competing with the BAcC not sure what that means? I far as I know most acupuncture registers (including Maria's) have been in discussion with the DoH.

Whether any future regulation changes the structure of any acupuncture course, we will have to see!

A few years ago the House of Lords (I think) in discussion about acupuncture recommended that acupuncturists should be a profession in its own right, and not necessarily be practised by doctors, nurses and physios.

The BAcC, along with other regulating bodies for acupuncture, are still in discussion with the DoH regarding statutory regulation. The process is ongoing - and does not look like being finalised any time soon, unfortunately. Originally, it was hoped to be sorted by 2009!!! The date being bandied at present is more like 2012 - but dont hold your breath!!

As for the comment about University degrees - I am pleased to have completed mine, as I have the confidence to practise, due to the information and guidance given by my tutors - some of whom are experts within the field of TCM.

The "other stuff" we were taught ranged from Western medicine, differential diagnosis and pathophysiology, through to health psychology and business studies - all of which are proving useful in the big world. The idea of a 3 year degree, is that when statutory regulation is enforced, people will need to have that level of training to be registered with the BAcC - although yes, grandparenting will be in use - or so they say at present.

Everyone needs to find the right way for them to learn - but personally I would recommend courses approved by the BAcC, as you and your future patients are covered then by their Codes of Practise and levels of competence.

Just my thoughts, via my own experience - but as I say - each to their own. Good luck to all embarking on courses in Acupuncture!!!!
