Okay, I signed up for the free newsletter since everyone's talking about this company.  The first installment recommends giving free massages to an upscale company like a law firm in the expectation that you will build repeat business beyond what you give away.  I personally, usually hold fast to the not giving massage for free to anyone.  Even my close friends pay a nominal fee for my services.  Has anyone done this and how did it work out?  Did you get ahead of how many free massages you ended up doing?  I'm not asking for anyone to reveal financials but an overall picture of how it worked.  Thanks all, Joe E.

I'd like to know about what Joe posted as well, as I haven't given my services away, nor do I really want to.  I already feel as though I am when I charge one client $40 for a housecall instead of my normal $70.  How long do some of you wait before increasing prices?  These rates are for a one hour home visit.

Joe,   When I first started doing massage, I went to the local hospital and did free massage for two different days at different times (tried to get different people and different shifts).  I did 46 ten minute massages.  Out of those I got 21 appointments and all of them rebooked at least once.  I also got the head of 3 depts to buy half-hour massages for their employees.  Total investment of time 10 hours (including travel) of no income at the time I was charging $45 an hour. (10 x 45 = $450)  I got 42 appointments since each person booked again  (42 x 45 = $1890)  and the Gift Cert sales were $500 (18 gift certficates (of which 6 were redeemed)  Total investment was 55 hours.  Total revenue was $2390 or approx $43 an hour  (not bad discount overall).  I know others who have done this "Give to Get" idea and all of us have gotten excellant returns on our investments.  This is also how I got the contract with a major manufactoring co.  They were so impressed they give me a room in their medical dept and refer any muscle work to me--my overhead $0.   Something to think about.

Even if you got dramatically less response from the "give to get" strategy, it still pays off over time in terms of name recognition.  That was 52 people who got to know your work...and your name.  Even if they would not take the time to come and see you as a client, if they enjoyed your work (as it sounds like they did), they will tell other people.  Over time you would begin to get referrals from referral sources you have never met...at least that's my experience.  If you touch enough people with really good work, people who have only heard of you will think of you first when they think of massage.  I agree with the experts.  When you are first starting out and have time on your hands, give it away and give it away to very large groups of interested people.Cassandra
