Courses for making lotions etc

Although I am an Aromatherapist, I am unable to sell the products I make as I do not have the right qualifications for that. Other than Aromantic, do you know of any other places that do courses ? Ideally I would like to make creams, cleansers, shower gels, shampoos etc

Just typed long message and then lost it! Aagh!! As far as I know JoJo, you don't actually need to have a certificate in selling products. I think this is just a ploy to sell courses. What you do need is the technical data behind each batch you produce. I would suggest you do some research on the net. Contact trading standards etc for more information. I mentioned I would like to do this to my tutor who then said how difficult it was to do and how she was compiling a course to help teach people. However, it was that much of a neccessity colleges would be offering the courses and as yet they aren't. If you look at some of the website on the net they offer write ups on the legal documentation you need to keep. Accordsing to my tutor you need a thick technical file on each product containing the batch number, where the oil was obtained, which country it originated from etc.

I, too, am interested in doing this (when I have a house big enough to store the products!!) but for now I order my base products from Naturally Thinking and then add my own oils. You are able to sell to your own clients because they have had a consultation - although as a very business minded friend suggested - you could always offer a consultation combined with sale of first product and then continue to sell to them... not sure if would work though!

I have thought of Aromantic too but the price and location puts me off.

Hi Delighted, I didn't mean a course to actually sell. I'm not good at making myself clear! The lady at the insurance company stated that I needed relevant qualifications to make to sell to non clients, to retail essential oils, to retail products online, I asked if my Aromatherapy qualification was enough she said no it wasn't, apparently I need to go onto a course to learn how to make what I wanted i.e shower gels etc, to get the qualification, I think I'm going to ring them again and ask someone else lol I have emailed insurance to ask if Aromantic and Plush Folly courses are qualification enough !

I always look longingly at Aromantics stuff at shows, but never have the money to sign up for courses. Plush Folly do a distance learning course, which appeals to me, they send you all the stuff and you print off the documents yourself. Still over £100 though.

Will get in touch with the insurance company today and post as soon as I know.

Hi Joanna. Thank you for your email. You do not need a qualification if you just wish to sell products that you have purchased and not altered in any way, via your website. You need a qualification to cover you for making your own products and then selling them.

So there you have it, I have decided to save some pennies and go with Plush Folly as they do Natural Skin Care course and also a Cosmetic Legislation & Selling Legalities course as the product will need to be safety assessed.

These will be done as a home study course with tutor on hand via email. It's about £361 *gasp* but thats also for making liquid soaps, not sure I want to do that, will have to see

I asked on another forum about it all, and was told to change my insurance company immediately as it was a lot of rubbish, and they were all after money lol they couldn't see how selling stuff I will have made, affects insurance. Yet they make soaps and have insurance ! Go figure

P.S Have decided to save pennies and go for the Natural Skin Care and Cosmetics Legislation, bit cheaper at around £240

I did the Aromantic courses and they were very excellent. I have also done the cosmetic legislation course with Plush folly - also very good - I did both in person. I would recommend the legislation one be done in person as it is quite complicated - I found it invaluable and I got lots of hand outs and was able to ask loads of questions etc.

I found a course about making products really helpful as I found out about lots of essential oils, vegetable oils and other ingredients which I never new existed beforehand and got to smell them and try them out before buying them. It also gave me confidence in making products. I also learnt about current trends and what was popular in the cosmetics industry at the moment.

Also essentially oils who are based in oxford run courses in natural skincare and are about £70 each. Not sure what the courses are like as I haven't been on any.
