courses without massage?

I already have a massage diploma in Swedish massage and Stone therapy. Is it possible to do an aromatherapy course that is a short course and does not include repeating the massage?

I;m not sure about this one Julie, due to the fact that they are actually tightening up the rules regarding aromatherapy.
most people who have done a year's course at college are being urged to do a bridging courses to bring them up to the same standard as everyone else. I personally think this is shocking as I did my IIHHT diploma at a local college with faith in the qualification and refuse to 'upgrade'.

at the end of the day, you learn a different style of massage than the swedish techniques.

I also heard that most colleges now only teach 'aromatherapy' with ready-mixed oils. so you will use a revitalising blend for someone who needs a pick-me-up, a calming blend, etc, etc, which is shocking!!! I stress on my literature that the client gets a personal blend of essential oils to suit their individual needs emotionally and physically.

Not sure about find a course, but I have heard/seen on this site there is one.

I though that Swedish massage was a firmer massage to that of a Aromatherapy massage.

I finished My Aromatherapy course in July and did not use pre-blended oils then. However if I hed been doing a Beauty Therapy Level III course, a short Aromatherapy course is a part of that part of that part of that course and they do use pre-blended oils.

hi Julie.........I would be surprised to learn that there is an aromatherapy course that only teaches about oils and doesn't involve having to learn the massage techniques. the aromatherapy massage I learned is a neuromuscular massage...........and very different from a Swedish massage. all the Tsubo/acupressure points also need to be learned.

do remember that if you don't do a recognised course you may well not be able to get insurance to practice it.......... but good luck with it

daisy.......... why would you have to 'upgrade' from an aromatherapy diploma? I have not heard this.

Folling on from Daisy, I've joined the FHT, and looked into joining the bodies for each therapy. With Aromatherapy, they look to have at least a full year of tutoring, rather than the five months I spent coving it on the Full time Dip in Holistics.

I find this very frustrating, as I am a qualified aromatherapist!

I would agree with you that the massage techniques are different.

I have been teaching since the 1970's and have never used pre-blended oils and all my students do the same. My teacher was a professor and taught me that.

All my students are fully insured to practice without bridging courses and I have refused to enter any of the so-called aromatherapy associations.

We are our own association and self regulate ourselves.

As for a recognised course, recognised by whom?

All I need to be recognised by, is my insurers.

As for the bridging courses to bring them up to the same standard as everyone else, there are some aromatherapists that I know would say that they do not want to do the bridging course because their standards are higher anyway. I think you could call it CPD.

thanks for that Urban hippy, you are right, it was part of the beauty course that only taught pre-blended oils, thanks for putting us all straight there. I knew I had heard it from a therapist friend, but she was on a beauty course at the time. she also did an advanced massage module and it was so shockingly bad that she refused to accept the certificate that was issued to her.

and as I said earlier, you are taught a different style of massage.

aromatherapy massage is all about getting the oils into the body via the skin, it tends to have long, flowing strokes and is very nurturing.

Its interesting to hear about the FHT's standards.
