Even if a steward/waiter tries to push you to make a girl dance, it is your choice, there is no obligation to allow them to push you into making a decision you are not comfortable with. At a minimum, ask the girl directly if she can dance on certain songs of your choice. If she does not sound confident, then move on from her.

If you are on a budget, then focus on girls that have proven themselves while dancing for other patrons. If you have the budget to experiment, then go with the waiters/stewards recommendation, with the understanding that you could end up wasting money on a bad dancer.

If you are trying out an unproven/unknown dancer, don't pay more than Rs300 to the bad dancers for 1 song, but make sure you don't repeat them at all. I guess DB girls have become more demanding nowadays. Pre-Covid I rarely paid more than Rs300 per song to any DB dancer. The girl had to be really exceptional to earn Rs500 per song.
