Washington was a General in the Revolutionary army. When he became the first President he knew he had to create stability in the new country. He was honest and believed in duty. He put the country first and not become a new “King”. When a job was done, he’d reduce his power and authority. After the war it was a very unstable time so he used his power to unite the country and not divide it. That set the groundwork for democracy to grow.

Jackson wanted more power, he wanted to be “King”. He vetoed many laws passed by Congress.He supported slavery and forced Native Americans from their lands. They both served in the military but as Presidents they were very different. Washington was country first and Jackson the opposite.

Man that's crazy. You think today's leaders would learn from Washington. Today, America is much too divided..

Washington didn’t campaign to become President and didn’t want the job but the Country unanimously elected him so he took the job out of a sense of duty.

Impressive. Especially his campaigned cost absolutely nothing. Wish I could see the millions of ppl who went to Washington's Inauguration back in 1789. That must've been something.
Now I can see why Washington is ranked high and will always be remembered. He was born to be the President.

But im sure it's different now than it was three centuries ago..Seems like Americans today want their President to be very patriotic and to rule as a king in the White House @ the same time..

That is, they elect people (Representatives, Senators, and the President) that can all be removed from office (impeached or not re-elected) if they don’t serve the people. The power is shared. With a “King”, in the old traditional sense, the King has all the power and makes all the decisions and the people have none.

In a Democracy, people thereby decide what laws, rules and boundaries that they want society to live by and the people they elect will implement them. That is “Freedom”. With a “King” they have zero power the King will decree everything. That is when their “Freedom” is taken away.
