Why? I don't get it.

Normally you see country's adapt to make tourists feel more welcome i mean it is one of the biggest streams of income. The only thing i see Thailand adapting to is the western prices.

Is there any sane reason why there need to be a ban of alcohol during these times? Even though i dont think they will ever enforce these rules in Pattaya.

In Phuket it doesnt really matter since they close everything early anyways, which is bullshit too imo.

Phuket as a tourist area has later drinking places that any other resort.You can drink till daylight in some places.:happyi:

The big problem with Thailands alcohol problems are that the authorities refuse to accept the fact that Thais do not drink in tourist areas at tourist prices.Most Thais will go to a bottle shop and but some cheap rotgut Lo Kow whiskey.:aan:

By the way when the 7/11s refuse to sell booze just walk along to the nearest Family Mart - they do sell it.:

Yes and in general terms it closes earlier and has less obvious drinking dens.. Of course it has them, but in broad strokes Phuket is the most lax tourist zone I see..

OK... Seems somehow the great gulf was crossed..

This is the official police order.. I have had spinner read it and she said 'no this is for shop' I asked where it says shop or bar and she says it doesnt, she is assuming it is for shop.. When I explained this was given to a bar owner she reread it and says it doesnt specify either way.

I am unable to read it and so here it is



Seems to me highly unusual.. Perhaps it just a police shakedown.

Are bars in Pattaya closing daytime ?? Are they paying to be left open ??

Please little Jimmyholio bit more respect to Khun Crusty. Yes I have been to Pattaya and yes the bars in Phuket do more visibly obviously stay open later as a general rule.

Its just the view i got... While i found Phuket to totaly die, at 2.. Many places in Pattaya staid open all night round. Much more visible then in Phuket where all lights is turned off in the soi's.

The normal Bars I am in (Tiger etc) often 3:30 - 4 or later before its closure..

Discos run 1/2 - 1 hour longer..

Then Sansabai late.. Many of those until midday next day..

Looks like some enterprising M.I.B has used the 'standard' letter sent to shops/retail outlets and given it to some bar owners (I'm guessing all farang) and is looking to make some tea money.

The 'new' law for shops etc was brought in on 1st Jan 2006.

I think if this was a 'national' policy then it would have hit the newspapers/forums and we would have heard a lot more about it , so far , it seems to have been only 2 farangs(??bar owners??) who have posted on Pattaya forums .

It is actually new enforcement of an old ignored law..

The sale of alcohol is restricted to those hours (since 1975 I read) but no one took any notice.. The last year or two first shops.. Now (some) bars..

Same goes for stopping at midnight.. Thats the law.. But even police think thats way to restricted..

I guess this changes from time to time.
For the last year its been no problem drinking until sunrise in Patong. Though the atmosphere is not the same at those late hours. Only a few bars open, most of the girls left runs off to safari etc.

When i was in Pattaya in 2004, everything was dead by 1:00 It was back to "normal" on my return last year.
From my experience the average bar closes earlier in Patts than in Patong.

But Phuket dont have later drinking hours than any other holiday resort.. maybe in Thailand..
