This is really a fascinating discussion.
AKB- I agree that reminder phone calls, etc do not violate any privacy issues. Doctors offices, the optomitrist, dentists, and other health care offices do this all the time. Certianly, you should run your bus. in a way that makes you feel comfortable.
Besides, if you "can't" call them, how can you return a call to set up an appt.?
This is one of those things that, for me, falls under the "would you like a reminder call" category. I always ask, and some folks don't want a call, and some do and are very happy to be reminded- just like the follow-up "how are you doing" call.
There is an MT I go to who gives a follow up call several days after the appt. to check in. I actually got the idea of doing that from her, and I find it really nice to be asked how I am feeling. Among many other things, like being an excellent MT, this is one of the things that stuck out to me as being a practice that I wanted to return to, as well as refer clients to.
So, all in all, I think a follow up call is great IF the client would like one, but I think trying to sell another appt. would be off-putting, unless, as some have mentioned, there are specific conditions which would warrant several return sessions.
