Blaggitt, excellent post. There's a lesson in there for posters in other threads who have been in similar situations and had a horrible time. You could have sit around feeling sorry for yourself thinking "I got conned" or "this has all turned-out crap". No. You'd done some research by the sound of it and made the most of it. To digress a little, my advice in general about China is to learn at least some very basic Mandarin before stepping foot on the plane. It's not difficult and will make the trip much easier + go down very well with the locals.

Written Chinese (i.e. as seen on dating web sites) is very difficult to learn, but spoken Mandarin isn't as difficult as some would make it out to be.

I used Chnlove.com and paid for translations between myself and several girls until I narrowed my choice down to just one.
