Gateway Workshops

Hi everyone,
I am considering taking an Indian Head Massage course with Gateway Workshops. Has anyone else done this? It sounds impressive from the website but I just wanted to know from someone who has actually done it.

Hiya

I am not in a position to comment on these particular workshops however I have said this many times and stick to this that I do not agree that one day workshops do not cover this subject adequately for practising therapists, however as an introduction for for those that do not wish to earn money from it but just family and friends I think they are ok, but otherwise they dont float my boat...

just my opinion of course.

I have to agree with TigerBee on this one as well. There is no contest between learning a new subject in a day and doing a full course (6 months in my case for the IHM VTCT one). It includes remote case study work and full A&P of the area you are working on - something you can't possibly do in a day.

However, if you have qualifications in the relevant treatment and want to tag-on a related therapy, ie Indian Face Massage to IHM (or Thai Foot Massage if you work in reflexology), then as you have the related A&P and knowledge of that area anywayI don't think that it a bad idea to do a one-day course.

Saw this thread today. I've attended this course last October in south London. It was a great day! The teacher was fantastic, very energetic. We had many laughs during all the tough work. Yes, it was very much in one day. I suspect it would have been easier if I had had more practical knowledge of massage beforehand. I only had part of the theory (books and dvd:s).

Also, I agree with Sue and Tiger. With just that single day of practise I don't think it would be possible to go out and massage unknown people. It takes a lot of practise before that. The teacher urged us to do that too.

My reason for attending the course was purely for familiar reasons and if that's your aim too I'm sure you'll enjoy it just as much as I did. We got very good notes to follow at home.

One thing - if you decide on this - avoid driving a car. The course was so intense physically and mentally that at least I was completely exhausted afterwards. It was hard to concentrate on anything else. Guess you could say I was "high" It took hours for my head to slow down.

But yes - I would absolutely recommend it!

Thanks for the reply. I am doing the course on Monday 28th Feb and really looking forward to it. I have already done a couple of introductory courses so I know what to expect (I think). I am going by train so the car won't be a problem as long as I don't fall asleep on the train!

Hi I did Sue's course and it was fantastic it was amazing what she took u through in a day. She is a good and careful teacher and she only had a few people at the course and was able to give attention to everyone was able to answer every question. I brought her video which is an excellent back up to the day.

Clients have all appreciated my Indian Head massages. Hope this helps u

Hi all,
Had a great time on the course although I now have a rotten headache to show for it. I have already done two introductory courses to IHM so I knew what to expect but I still learnt a lot. I think if I had been completely new to it then I would have found it hard to take it all in on a one day course. Anyway I'm pleased I have done it - what's next on the agenda???

Just wanted to add that I did Gateway's Indian Face Massage one-day course last Thursday and was impressed at how thorough it was. The day went quickly and we packed in loads of information but we didn't feel loaded down with it all by the end of the day. I didn't realise how much goes into an Indian Face Massage and it must be one of the truly holistic facial treatments around. I can't wait to add it to my treatments.

I'd thoroughly recommend this course (which I think is CMA backed) though I think it helps if you have some relevant A&P and some knowledge of skin structure. It's a perfect partner to Indian Head Massage.

when we were taught the IHM we were also taught the face massage as part of the routine, doesnt seem much point learning IHM without learning the facial as no point releasing the scalp and not the face!!!!!

I couldn't believe how different the IFM massage is to the one we learnt in IHM. The IFM goes into so much more detail. The face massage (which is performed on the couch) takes at least one hour to complete (I'm still trying to get the moves down to 1 hour). There is relaxation and exploration; stimulating pressure points; initial releases; smoothing out tension; stabilizing; deeper releases and finally grounding. The face massage I learnt within the IHM treatment has much less detail.

are you talking about the facial rejuvination method pioneered by the mehta's, it kinda sounds like a watered down version of that?, there is simply no way you could do that in a day....!!!!

Hi Tigs,

Can't comment on Mrs Mehta's class but speaking for myself, I felt comfortable with the course last week bearing in mind I had the A&P and skin structure, muscular-skeletal knowledge beforehand - I was also familiar with a lot of the moves. Also, another plus was that there were only four of us on the course so we almost had individual attention.

sorry Sue, maybe i didnt explain myself properly, I wasnt trying to say you would not feel comfortable on the course, just trying to see if it was the same or different...you do not do any a&p work on the actual rejuvination course (although you will be examined on it) you are given everything you need to know but pretty much the entire three days is hands on....there was only 6 on the class i did and three instructors so the ratio was excellent... sounds similiar but not quite the same...
