Get A REAL Job!!!???? (Long Post)

REBA,      Im in the same boat your in.  I was engaged and owned a house with a man then my world came crashing down around my ears at the age of 23 and had to move back in with my mother.  I started Massage school right before my 24th bday and graduated last Dec.  I cant imagine doing anything else with my life.  After I posted this back in Aug.  my car died (my dad is still working on it 3 wks latter...) my dad offerd to loan me one of his 2 AVAILABLE cars if I got a real job.  Needless to say Im still down a car and have been very inventive on ways to get to work.  I will not walk away just because of this....and have begun looking for another car just in case he decided to make it XMASS before he gets done! lol    I sat down last night and looked at my past two weeks income (after my rent for my space) and realized that I made with 17 clients what I was makeing at my old job in a 2 week pay peirod (80hours)!!!  Like you I think I will stay with my NOT SO REAL JOB!!! And I want to thank everyone for their words of encouragment.  It has made a world of Diffrence to me!

Well, I signed up for school and start this Friday down here in Houston.  I was laid off a couple of years ago from a "real job" and began to panic that I might not be able to find another "real job" to pay the rent with.  Realized that I really disliked what I had been doing for so long and could only see a long future of despair and frustration topped by retirement with nothing after to look forward to.  So decided to find what made me happy and see if I could support myself with that.  Long story short, it turned out that I came up with massage therapy.  In the time since then, I have come to accept that this is going to be my "real job" and couldn't be more excited about it.  My family has not said anything, though I know they would rather I do something more conventional - stay on somewhere for 10-15 years, hating my job, and get that almight pension.  There thinking now is "well, he's tried so many weird things before, we'll just sit back and see what happens this time."  And, by the way, I will be 50 in November of this year.   So this is a major shift in the direction of my life at a late seforum.xxxe.  I'm excited, I'm ready, and could not be more happy that I will have the opportunity to help people like I have wanted to my whole life.

Steve,I was 33 when I decided to go to school for MT.  That was 7 years ago.I had a classmate who was 40. One of my teachers was 46 when he went to school for massage... And I know another MT here in my town who started her MT training at 60 (she was a PT but it was getting to hard on her body, she does mostly Swedish and Reiki).I've said for years what would have happened if I'd have discovered MT as a teenager? I could have been a whole different person!  I think it will help you as a massage therapist to come to Massage as a person who has had other jobs/careers.  The skills you learned from having those other jobs will help you to be a more effective business owner, marketer, MT and all the other hats we have to wear! LOL

Just another word of encouragement for Steve:Like Maestra, I went to MT at age 33.  My best friend went at the same time; she was 48 at the time.  Sometimes I think this career happens for a person when they are developmentally "ready."  As for my best friend, 7 years later at age 55 she gives the best massage I've ever had and no one in a three county area compares.  I wish you a long and fulfilling career.
