In comparison to 'home' , total acts of random violence are virtually unheard of here.
Gangs of kids dont just go around jumping a foreigner like they might an 'asian' or somebody 'different' back home.
But if the farang is involved in some sort of disagreement or small altercation, and doesnt walk away, then an inordinate amount of force will often be used to sort him out, and then random acts of violence by random Thai passer-bys will be included in that beating. Of course we dont hear about incidents where-in disagreements are amicably resolved.
Having said that , I would also state that Im often gobsmacked by the amount of farangs that exhibit bad behavours whilst here. From the shirtless young Australians wandering down Bangla with their bikini topped sheilas yelling out stuff like ,"Look at all these sluts!", to the steroid charged Northern Europeans shoulder charging passer byes, to mouthy little chavs , and grubby Latins , and oggling Indians all misshandling girls AND the situation, Im genuinely surprised that you can have so many 'fcuked up' people on one street and not have way more brawls...
I had to listen to a Brit the other day, talk in glowing terms of how much he'd 'improved' his useless ( and young and pretty ) Thai girls life, and that her villiage and family were total failures as human beings....and he was being nice!
If I were the girl, who understood all that was said, even I would have bottled him.
If you can remember that you are a visitor and act with decorum, and refrain from challenging anyone, you will not have any problems.
This is in sharp contrast to my best friends brother, who returned to Aus after living in the Canarys for 10 years , and promptly had his jaw broken by a gang of marauding kids hed never seen before, as he and his wife left a restaurant after his first meal 'back home'.
