A bus driver told you that transfers were still valid? Hmm... Well, the following is from the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System web site:

Bus Fares
Exact fare, please. Drivers cannot make change. No upgrades or free transfers to or from the trolley or other buses are allowed. If your trip involves more than one bus or the trolley and a bus, consider purchasing a Day Pass.

I'm a big fan of walking. I almost never take a taxi to and from the la Zona. There are those who think walking in TJ is very dangerous. You'll need to formulate your own opinion based on your intuition and experience. To me, TJ is far easier to navigate than any of the big U.S. cities on the East Coast.
As for walking from the San Diego airport to downtown, please note that, as stated, it is about 1 1/2 to 2 miles which is a very long walk for some people. For others, it is a chance for enjoyment and exercise.
My post was not meant to be an exhortation but merely to provide an alternative. It would never be my intention to have a fellow monger crash on a hotel bed alone. You should only crash on a hotel bed when a chica is between you and the bed!
Respectfully submitted,
