hi,

has anybody heard if we need to get hepitius injection if we give treatments? a friend told me its must now days, dont want want to go to my GP just in case its not necessary, she might think i lost it.

Think I posted on a similar thread a while ago but can't find it at the moment. I do work in care homes amongst other places and one of the carers suggested a year ago that I get the Hep B vaccine. I rang my doc's surgery and asked if I could speak to the nurse. The receptionist asked what it was about and when I told her, she said, "Well, we have to have it done, and we stand with a pane of glass between us and the patients." Spoke to the nurse and she recommended I get it done. Our docs don't charge for it, but I did pay for the blood test to see if it had taken afterwards: you have one injection, then a 2nd one a month after the first, then a 3rd one 6 months after the 2nd. Then you wait 6 months to a year and get a blood test to see if it's in your system. I had it there but there wasn't quite enough of it, so I had to go back for a booster jab. In the new year I need to get another blood test done but it should be okay now.

I would recommend it but I would speak to your friendly GP surgery if you have any questions.

I can understand that nurses etc need to have the vaccine due to possible exposure, butisn't Hepatitus only spread by:

1) Contaminated food/water
2) Faeces
3) Unprotected sexual contact
4) Drug users sharing needles

I congratulate you for being so conscientious, but as a therapist I don't see that any of the above should come into a professional practice...?

As I say, the receptionists have it at our doc's surgery and they stand behind a wall of glass most of the day, and from what the nurse and carers told me, it can also be spread from coming into contact with bodily fluids: sorry to be so forthcoming with details, but at the care home I've been scratched by clients who've drawn blood, and have had snot wiped over me. All it takes is one small nick and that could be it.

Hep B is what nurses tend to fear more than the risk of HIV, so I think it's a vaccination worth having. There's definitely been a thread about this previously but it's gone now. Someone had peviously posted that they applied for a job as a therapist but was required to have proof of Hep B vaccination - so it's obviously something that's becoming more prevalent. If I had therapists working for me, I'd advise they looked into having it done for their own protection.

I worked as a support worker for around 18 months and was strongly advised to have vaccinations against Hep. B too. Most of my colleagues had this done and it was also recommended by the company that I was then working for.

As far as I am aware Hep. Bis transmitted through coming into contact with bodily fluids. If this means that people you are working with are potentially putting you at risk, I personally think that it is worth having.

i work as a dental hygienist thus need to be vaccinated against all sorts- all i'd say is prevention is better than cure-you would be suprised how much you can pick up from saliva alone-plus hep b can survive outside the body for ages. the injections are fine-and probably a lot nicer than hep b!

So what are they using as the vaccination? don't they usually give a mild form of whatever they are trying to vaccinate you against to build up the immune system?

Like azalia i was confuse when my friend told about hep b injection, cause i thought i give body massage how could i catch it, so she give me the same information as Red Bess has given, she said you can get it from body fluid, she said now all the tutors in london colleges recommend their student to go and get it done, so i'm off to my surgery after xmas holiday to make appointment with the nurse.

I thought I could give you what I know about Hepatitis...

There are 3 forms of Hepatitis: A, B, and C. They are all liver illnesses/diseases.

A is easily caught by dirty water/food and easily rid off in 2 weeks, and most people never know they have had it anyway, as it makes you sick like gastric bugs...But if you are very week or an alcoholic, then you may not recover as easily, or at all.

B is passed - if my memory is good - through sexual intercourse/blood contact...There is a Vaccine for it. Inmany European countries95% of the population was told to get vaccinated in the eighties after much alarm by the governments, so I did. Only to hear 4 years afterwards that it is thought to have cause a very serious (nerve, I think) disease in some people. Luckily this did not happen to me. Many doctors have defended their support of the Vaccine by saying the disease was caused by Hep B vaccine being administered too near in timeto other vaccines. The virus does not survive well in the open air.

Hepatitis C (or liver cancer)is THE scary one, it can be passed through the saliva if you have a cut (we often have minor cuts) in the mouth and the infected person or object makes contact with you (kissing, sharing of razor or tooth brush: intimate objects...ie, it can be passed through unwashed dentistry, medical, tattoing, piercingequipment. It does not survive well in water especially if the water is put in the fridge. Saying that, my doctor abroad said you have to kiss an Hep. C sufferer deeply and for long to run a real risk...
There is no vaccine anywhere for it. Drinking alcohol makes one weaker when affected by the illness as it is liver cancer..

You may think, at least I did, how come half of the clubing-drinking-and-"kissing" -population has not been wiped off, with such a vicious virus? (or at least a few people who like me, rushed to have their ears, lips, and belly buttons pierced one day in their existence at a dodgy shop/market stall in the eighties with a "gun"-by the way, reason for which you should never get pierced with a "gun" as it is hygienecally unsafe..)?

Well I don't know and am perplex athow wehaven't heardmore about it in the news..it is growing as fast as or even faster as Aids, so surely the media could start talking about it. But instead they mention "sexually transmitted diseases", which people interprete as "ok, it's safe, it's just chlamedia" or "ok, it's safe, it's dodgy people sleeping with dodgy people and passing on Aids"....

A few years back I heard that massage therapists should be vaccinated against Hep B. So I asked my friend, who was a therapist, and she looked at me as if I asked a bizaar question. In fact, when I asked ITEC tutor, she thought that's not necessary and I don't think ITEC warns about it either.

I know some universities are requesting students to have the vaccination done if they want to enrol in one of their body therapy degree course.

Hairdressers are required to have it done? If so, why not massage therapists!?
I, too, heard that Hep B is much easier to catch than HIV.
