I'm close to the area I studied for. I did a double major in 'not very practical' at university, then studied an area of geekery at college. I started in my area of geekery, then moved to another area of geekery. I actually mulling a hop into the the skilled trades (probably electrical or plumbing) for a change of pace. (And I have have the money in the bank.)

)I am and have been employed in related fields to my studies, which was primarily purchasing, inventory control, production control blah blah. Many fields are applicable. Had two older female cousins who were directed into female studies (as in home economics and nursing. One got a PHd and head of a college in Australia with that home ec degree, the other left nursing to get a law degree and is now a health services legal advocate or some such thing lol. Parents have ideas of what their kids should do, but kids will find a way to do what really works best for them, if they are lucky.
