How much $$?

I live in Illinois, which as you know has no state requirements yet for massage therapists.  I chose to go to school in Iowa and be trained professionally.  I could have just started massage and would have been grandfathered in.  My only guess as to why pay rates are so low in my area is the lack of regulations.  Does anyone know if that's what makes such a pay difference?

How much $$?

Idaho isn't a regulated state either. Cost for massage is about $45 an hour and at both spas in town, they take 50%. I think maybe it is a combination of cost of living differences and demand for massage. Cost of living here is average and massage is fairly new and only slightly popular. Also, there is a school in town so a lot of students are willing to take low paying positions for the experience. As long as people take pennies for their work, people will only pay pennies.

Michigan has no regulations on massage.  The problem we have is down state where they are cranking out a new set of massage therapist every 6 weeks with a 195 hour course... And with thier limited training they will work for anything.  We aso have a problem with people comming up from the Detroit area expecting something other than massage...so they must be getting it.

Sadiedawn and Julee, We have the same things going on here.  There is a community college with a 100 hour program ??? that pumps out a bunch of people.You know, I have only applied for 3 jobs so far- But I just realized no one has asked if I'm certified or anything.

The school here is a 100 hour program. Go figure. To be honest though, they are turning out better professionals then some of the surrounding schools that have 500 to 1000 hours of education. The spa I'm leaving hires the 100 hour grads. I wonder if it's because they don't over analyze the situation and learn to "be" with the client?
