How to decide which association to join when qualified

Just thinking ahead really. How did you decide which "association" or "body" to join

I look at advertisements/cards for massage therapists and see so many different ones and am wondering where you start.

I would contact the FHT federation of holistic therapists, the CTHA the complementary therapists association (embody) and ask what they charge and what you get for that. You will need to be insured, these offer insurance options too.
It really depends on what you are practising. Although I am a member of the FHT i also joined the reiki federation as they give me great support in this field. If you are a reflexologist you may want to join the AOR, there are loads associated with many different types of therapies and it would be good to know what you intend to undertake to be able to help. I saw you put massage down, is that sports massage or just holistic massage.
Ask around, I am sure you will get lots of feedback here.
I find the FHT very good and the reiki association as well. Would like to join the AOR but have no need to and it is just more money, when I get all insurance, support from previous groups mentioned, happy hunting!

What therapy do you offer?

Generally you would go with your insurer or insure yourself through 'whatever' body

I am a member of certain groups and this has made no benefit to my status or bought about any additional work.

Unless you find one that 'works' progressively to promote the therapists i wouldn't bother.

But saying that i would probably go for the CNHC as they look to be at the top of the list for the future changes in the 'trade'

to join CNHC you must satisfy standards that are in place, PA membership confirms these standards are met.
The CNHC tag line is "are you good enough to be registered"

I did not mean" just holistic massage" as that is what i practice so no slight meant in any way at all. I was asking because the thread was about which body to join and i thought if it was sports massage that there may be a body that supports this group more, that was all. I am proud to do just holistic massage!

I agree with totally Jane. The most important aspect as a therapist is that you are insured to practice all your techniques. The associations can be quite good for keeping you in the industry loop with their magazines and suggesting some courses/schools etc but other than that......
