IGPP and Self certification CPD

Has anyone else had this this form and been bemused and confused by it?

I am a member a get my insurance provided through the IGPP provider. Every time I pass anew course I send them a copy of the certificate and ask them to add it it to my insurance (assuming at the same time they would take note and update my CPD credits at the same time. - it would seem not.

reading through the paperwork they have sent it would seem that unless a course is listed in the booklet they sent you need to pay £5 per course for them to check it out! - seems like money for old rope to me .

or have I got this wrong ?

Yes..........you have it right. The £5.00 is apparently an administration fee that they are charging to research the standard of the course that you undertook if it was not a Guild approved or accredited course.

It's not clear in t he paperwork - but if it is from a recognised body ,say an IFA course for Aromatherapy or a VTCT course or an AOR course for reflexology,you shouldn't have to pay should you ?

I phoned them earlier and they said the administration fee was to be charged as someone literally had to sit on the internet and investigate the courses. I agree surely they shouldn't have to do that for recognised courses. Seems odd to me too!!!

Hi All

Yes they do charge even if it is a course that is recognised by another professional body. Also they charge the organisation that arranges any CPD courses accredited by them so they win all ways!!!

I personally believe that as long as the courses are approved by a professional body or organisation CPD courses should be recognised by everyone. CPD is about professional development not making loads of money for some organisations.

hi, I had a smile when I got mine. They really don't want the work do they? What it actually says is if the course is not in the enclosed booklet (very glossy, very slick and no doubt very expensive! wonder who is paying for that DURH!!) then you have to pay the fee to have it checked out. I contacted them recently to ask them to cover me for a course that I have done which is new and they probably haven't heard of and I didn't get a reply, now i know why.

Of course they say they will do 'spot checks' wonder how many they will do of them? It seems ridiculous that we are meant to be heading for regulation and they aren't able to keep a check on things. I suppose that's why they call it 'self-regulation'?!!! Didn't realise we would have to regulate ourselves to this extent though!

There must be a way round this, if there are 10 people on a new course then that would only be 50p each if they were all guild members, if you got all the students from say 10 of those courses that would be a penny each, you could all send a cheque for a penny, which they would surely never bank as the charge would be greater!!!!

I feel very strongly about this too - surely if it's good enough for an insurance company it should be good enough for the Guild!!!!

Actually I did just that and now belong to an association that respects all forms of CPD and doesn't charge either the person who is providing the CPD training (within the association) or any therapist who wants to learn. This association is also part of the AC (formally the AOC) and is very professional and checks out all the courses and premises for their accredited courses.

I think its about time that we as therapists have a say in who is taking our money and dealing with our 'so called interests', this is big money making especially with an association with so many members.

Having got on my soap box yet again I do think CDP is essential to further learning/training and agree in principle to the concept, but surely the fact that the therapist wants to advance their learning should count for something and lets face it we are never going to be rich (money wise).

i did A, P & Massage with ITEC 6 years ago and then Reflexology with ITEC. i think ITEC and now the amalgamted GCP (GCPP?) has a blinking cheek charging as much as they do for membership AND insurance. when i asked what you get for the 58 quid membership, the girl was hard pushed to come up with anything other than a quarterly newletter (big deal!), stickers for my car and letters after my name!

when you are just starting out in this business, the last thing you need is that kind of expense... insurance yes, but membership costs? nah... i dont think so!

having said that... when i enquired about getting on a register with say AoR or BRA, they obviously dont think the ITEC qualifications are good enough because they want you to submit more case studies and do their exams, for extra money, of course!

the sooner there is one latge umbrella for theapies, the better! i may not want to stick with one exam board for future training.

and now i am on my soapbox <g>, how about news articles, papers or magazines, that extol the virtues of our therapies and then tell readers to contact the organisations (ie, Aor, BRA, etc)... do they ever mention ITEC? i've never seen it! i wrote to one once and said, if you are going to list organisations, list them all! AND, tell readers to look in YP and ask propective therapists about their qualifications... real ones have no qualms about being asked.

i would like to be on a register of an organisation, simply to maybe generate business... although i did email a few that are on the register and they said they dont get much, if any, from it! but then, who's register to use if you are multi therapied, especially when the media are not telling readers all of them.

I have obviously been diddled and not just with the missing sticker. I agree with you totally. We are being ripped off and it will probably get worse. I am considering changing too and I think a lot of therapists will as they catch on and there are bound to be competitors who will provide a cheaper service. noooooo.... i felt i could do without the stickers so i never joined!

their insurance is as reasonable as who i did go with but, of course, you cant have just insurance.

i also objected to their insistance on a 2million quid cover if you just wanted to be a member and go on the register... at that time, they were about the only ones doing 2m.

mine is a £2m cover so i daresay ITEC et al will increase theirs again, so as to exclude others.

I thought i was the only one who felt this way, what a joy to find others, when it was the GCP, it was small and friendly, I feel it grown so big now since the amalgamation that there will be many who will vote with their feet, but did you know it also costs megga bucks to have theIGPP investigate the course for CPD's and that the fee is payable yearly, not as so many were led to believe a once only. As for the costs idea, i will suggest that at the next course i teach and am sure people will participate, but you know not all insurers are following CPD, it never ceases to amaze me the blank looks I get when I talk about the credits accredited to my course.

I also voted with my feet last March when the amalgamation happened. Amazingly last week I had a call from a friend to tell I was still on their website list, despite having written to them and not paid any fees to them for the last year. Some organisation! They still send me their newsletter too, although I too missed out on the sticker.

ALhtough I received my newsletter the other day, I have not got round to reading it yet, although if what is being said here is true then that is a great cause for concern. Sorry if I am repeating things here but I have to get this clear in my own mind. I am correct in thinking that unless any course, you do is listed in their brochure of approved courses then you have to oay £5 to have it included in your list of credits so that they can verify it? If true then can I take it that this also extends to workshops and lectures that you attend?

If this is indeed true then I have to do some serious thinking about whether I want to sitll remain with them as well, or whether i should now go elsewhere. The troiuble is though that I took my ITEC exams etc some years ago, before they started bringing in all these regulations and rules. Back then there were acceptable as they were without the need for extra work. If I went elsewere would this still bt the case or would i have to start all over again, and what if I decied to rejoin the Guild at some time, what would happen then?

I don't even practise professionally any more, Im just want some cover for the odd treatment I do on a voluntary basis. Why should I have to pay all this money when I don't make anything from it myself then?

as an aside, and not asking anyone in particular just tagging it on here, why do we do CPD courses for points anyway... i mean, apart from our own personal interest in our chosen subject?

i would imagine that most true therapists would want to continue to develop and learn, so why are points alocated for particular courses... is it to do with how much money was paid for the course, as seems to be the case on the GCPP website. i get very cynical about these things... it all seems to revolve about us paying them more all the time.

i happen to think you develop naturally to en extent, with experience and, certainly do further courses that are of interest but i do question that organisations maybe compel us to do them. its good to share therapies with others actually... a great education often.

just because you dont do CPD's, does that make you a bad therapist? i dont think it has to.

I am glad I am not alone in feeling this unhappy , thought I was maybe being picky!

This has confirmed for me that I am not going to renew my membership with the guild at the next renewal date . I will get insurance elsewhere and with a body that recognises the work I have put in without having to pay through the nose for it.

Rosie , you have got me thinking - shouldn't there also be some measure of the practical work you do in CPD. If you are working full time as a therpist you are increasing in experience all the time , and miust be doing something good if your appointment book is full , so this should count as development too!
