Is it wrong to judge on appearances?

Is it wrong, or merely shallow? Or just human nature to rate them?
Forget the other features we find positive or negative, I'm just talking about looks.

Do we do a disservice to people in general if we celebrate their attractiveness and scorn those who don't rate well?

Should people who display themselves to attract attention and sometimes earn a living be praised when they are appealing?

I'm on the fence but strongly leaning to feeling shallow, I'd like to hear from intelligent people who have thought about this and even participate in the game despite being conflicted or accepting that's the way it is.

If you watch TV these days it's not about beauty but normal looking people. You can't tell me William Shatner is Sexy, only when he sings "I'm Too Sexy For...". You have to look at the whole person.

As bliss said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As children we would willingly play with any other child around, then we started to grow up and become influenced by other peoples opinions and beliefs. The world is built around beauty and glamor. All the ads on tv, magazines, movies and just about everything affects the way our young minds think.

Tennis for example had Steffi Graff as a media sensation when on tour at the same time was Aranchez Sanchez Vicario who wouldn't be recognized walking down the street yet was a gifted player.

so, in short. Yes you are shallow, but so are the rest of us and we came by it honestly.

Yes it is but there are no Angels on this site. We are what we percieve ourselves to be we either live with it or change. But it is hard to change once you are shallow.

I look at it this way...

My judgements are made on the best data available to me. When first meeting/seeing people, all you have is looks and body language and facial expressions. In some cases I'm attracted instantly and want to find out more about the person...in others, I'm repelled and avoid the person as much as possible. (This mostly applies to people on the street/complete strangers). As I get past outward appearances, then I have more data to judge by as they display more of who they are through their words and actions. Then I can make a judgement about them.

I'm pretty sure the people judge me incorrectly all the time. I'm a big guy who apprently looks intimidating to others...in reality, I'm more of a gentle giant. Women have even told me in the past that I was intimidating (in a good looks kinda way)...which shocked me since I tend to be very hard on myself and very very self conscious.

The key is to get past the knee jerk reaction of a first sighting and take the time to find out who a person is.

All that said...I love hot women and will gladly put up with a lot of shit as long as they are a feast for my eyes! Good looking guys are probably gay!

When someone is presenting themselves in a manner that is purportedly to highlight their attractiveness? Then I don't just say yeah, I say HELL yeah we have the right to rate them.

If you say rating someone on their physical appearance is wrong in any way shape or form, then rating ANYONE in ANY manner is also wrong.

So now we should throw out:
Intelligence tests?
Rating systems for olympic events?
Beauty contests?
Pay scales for an employee's skill?
safety ratings on cars?

Hell, just about every retail site online has rating systems for how people feel about the product, goods, or service. I mean hell, we even have ratings HERE on an escort's BB skills FFS......

Putting a number to our attraction to, or against someone's appearance is just our simplistic way of quantifying our feelings about that person's looks....no more, no less.

We all judge on appearances and are judged as well. Bottom line is how you carry and take care of yourself. We all need an approval nod from our peers but most forget how one presents themselves is the key. I believe the rating numbers here is just for folks to have fun and let loose.

There are beautiful women that once they speak one will rate them a 2/10 instead of 9/10. The same being with an average looking woman 6/10 becomes a 10/10 once you see they are warm kind and loving.

I say to all that don't approve of the rating system to take it as it is. Just a male ridden passing the time ritual that has no bearing on who we are.

I think judging appearance is instinctive but I have learned it is a dangerous instinct to follow. Looks are an initial gauge that will auto correct. I no longer judge lovers based on looks nor those that I pass on the street but I use to. A physically attractive person quickly loses appeal if I find their personality distasteful.

I've had Danny DeVitos rock my world and Brad Pitts leave me cold. I have had "fine upstanding members of the community" stab me in the back and homeless share their lunch with me.

Looks mean nothing when it comes to the measure of a man or woman. We do ourselves a disservice by allowing our base nature to go unchecked...

Well, as for the "unchecked" comment, I used to work in retail and I had samples of these spiral bound flip price cards. They had the numbers 0 - 9 on them. So the gang and I used to hang out on the corner at lunch time in the summer and check out all the hotties walking by.

So one day I brought out the ticket cards and handed them to the 6 of us. We'd flip a card over when a cutie walked by....we got a lot of laughs...until I flipped mine to 0 instead of 9...OH man she stopped, turned and said " A zero? What the hell!!!" lol...I said all embarrassed "oh sorry, I meant a 9 I really really did" lol....it was TOO funny, she was laughing, I was all embarrassed, the other guys were laughing......one of them said while she was there: he must be the russian judge!!!
