Any "official" statistics related to Phuket tend to be skewed by the fact that only half the people who live in the province are registered as resident.

While not denying that HIV/AIDS is something that people need to be aware of, I would draw nothing conclusive from the report. Maybe that makes me semi-literate, therefore incapable of critical analysis.

This is pure racist talk. I am certain you don't have any scientific survey that prooves what you say.
Must say that looking back on my career most cases of STD I saw were in Kenya (Mombasa), followed by Ecuador (Guyaquil).

Sent them to the doctor, and if not possible I had to give the penicillin shots. Gonnorhea was common, condom was seldom used, but HIV was unheard. Strange enough it were the young sailors, fresh on their first voyages who got it. Guess the older ones were more savvy.

Don't know, I didn't follow them on their trails. First ones I saw were always the deckboy and the cook's mate, followed by O/S (ordinary sailor) and apprentice engineer.
Know a case of an A/B (able bodied sailor) who had to go to the doctor in every port during 3 months. catched gonno in Guayaquil.

Correct. We suspected some stewards were gay... but those weren't considered sailors. Besides, never saw evidence of them (style of clothes, way of talking...).
