Sure arrival numbers looks good, but indians/arabs/russians/asians stay way shorter than western tourists and I am sure room nights stayed in Phuket are way down compared to 2 years ago. I were going to say they dont spend time in bars either, but I actually had some nice middle east customers last week tho.

But sure, we complain every year when low season kick in, lol.

That was pretty much the biz model for the kamala beer garden....and it worked very well for a number of years.....gone downhill now through lack of management attention

Wouldn't a more reasonable taxi/transport service help promote the lesser known areas, I'd imagine most of the tourists stay in and around Patong yet would face a 600-1000 baht roundtrip to Kata/Karon/Kamala/Phuket town. The bars could probably offer a pickup service but local mafia would soon cut that out.

Depends if you read the tabloids or pay attention to reality.

We've been in a mini-mining boom for the last six or more months, the ol' GFC is just an excuse for businesses to keep deferring pay rises and demand tax incentives.

Certain tabloids are not a fan of the current govt, so they talk up all these imaginary problems, business suffering, everyone's doing it tough(TM).

Reality is quite different, unemployment is low, A$ is up, when we can still afford to give just about every Kiwi who can swim over here a job we are doing quite well for ourselves especially considering how other western nations with similar economies are faring.

Give this blog a quick read dupes, might explain the situation better then I can.

On Tripadvisor, many promote other areas as family friendly. If you want night life, most will say go to Patong. That does not really help much. Cheaper transportation will certainly help. But . . . sad to say . ..

- i seem to confuse MaiChob, Evilbaz and Dupree for some reason (medication, gas, group chiming in of digs or more likely my grip finally being lost)

i'm not anti-prostitution whatever that means but anti-delusion about it

given its a widespread view that my posts come across as preachy i accept that's how they must sound but its certainly not my intention and i don't understand why disagreements of opinion easily convert to apparent personal differences (i've posted before that i fully accept the falibility of my views, but don't see the need to add imho and no offence in each and every post - maybe a sig is required? - that i choose not to socialise at MTB may play into this i suppose)

Sunset Plaza bars (Beach,Dolphin,BC bars) are just like that and very popular with couples/families and single guys too.
single guys can take a girl home if they want to wait around until closing time.

good food too.

DP you could lay on free transport to the outlying villages, but if they are not drinking in Tong, where the customers going to come from that want to go drinking in Kata etc, and think The Tong bar owners would support this???

I understand that in low season there's few enough customers to go around but as Nautilus pointed out a lot of places are advertised as family friendly which parts of Patong aren't really, there's also the backpackers who are on a budget and taking 1000baht out of their pockets before they even have a drink is a serious dent in their pocket. The older crowd are there as well and lets face it Bangla might not be their cup of tea.

Not saying the tuk tuks are to blame but on my last trip I stayed in Karon and ended spending around 1000baht a day on taxis alone. Just a thought is all, making it easier to get to can only be a good thing. Think of all the rural pubs that have gone under since drink driving laws(in Europe anyway) became a lot stricter, with no way of getting their customers to the pub or home again they had no business.
