Last night walking back 2 hotel about 2.30am , on Rat u Thut rd , just past boxing stadium, this LB grabbed my arm said i go with u, i said no and kept walking, but "it" kept grabbing my arm shoulder, i kept walking on , then i could feel something going in2 my pocket, i grabbed its hand out of there squeezed it & pushed it away, luckily my wallet was still there, the thing then threw arms in air yelling something & walked off, to some other & try luck again.

I have been to phuket 4 times now and not had a problem....maybe too ugly even to be pick pocketed.

But jokes aside with the touts for anything from 500 baht beers to "Armani" suits, lady boys and street walkers I tent to keep my goods in the lower pockets of my cargo shorts (down near the knee) , and give firm polite no thank you's to anyone about to approach. Its always worked in the past, but maybe the problems a truck load bigger than it was last March. Cou,d be saying a lot of no thank you's.
Guess I will know in november, but I did feel more secure with my cash in low down pockets way out of reach unless the LB is on it's kne....geeez that aint gonna happen 555

with regard to the LB thieving problem, man its rife everywhere, well in LOS anyway, and its a small factor in me not going to Samui, not big, just in the back of my mind,a mate leads me to believe that he got lots of hasle when there in the early hours.. Sure you only have to look at Pattaya one news to, every second incident involves LB's robbin someone.. Comes with the turf IMHO.

I can promise you I DO read what I write here. Lets bear in mind that this happened a number of years ago as well. I don't and would never, as you imply condone people being attacked (and comparing this to the she was asking to get raped scenario seems well over the top). You are a big guy- if you'd just shouted at her/him aggressively before 'she' got in your space things may have been different. However I can't second guess an incident that happened a number of years ago. (I will provide situation awareness lessons when you return here for US500 per day if required- Denver will probably do it for 300!)

What i am trying to get through is that everyone bears a certain amount of responsibility- if you put yourself in a vulnerable situation people will take advaneforum.xxxe of it- it's human nature NOT Patong nature. I agree that anyone has the right to walk safely down a street, but I think back even further than your incident to when I was attacked by the 'man with 2 knives' in Boracay 20 years ago. Everything got 'sorted out' and I was quite happy, but agreeably a bit more aware, when I went out the next night.

The bearing on the rest of the world is obvious- it's about keepng things in context. I hate using the 'a mate' example but I know a guy who was robbed on Copacabana Beach in broad daylight. it's not an issue perculiar to Patong.

The issue is not that it happens.. Surely the issue is that there is so little will to stop it happening.

The addition of a couple of cops on that road, or one or two plain clothes to witness what goes on, to simply arrest and charge the offenders..

If crimes happen nightly and pretty much non stop, then why not attempt to stop the crimes ?? I mean they sure seem to have enough cops sitting in Tams and around the end of seadragon per night, they sure can find the time to have a cop visit every out of the way bar to have a special 'relationship' with.. But simply the addition of 2 - 4 cops on beach road and some arrests and rounding up of perps would solve the problem or at least go a long long way to changing it.

A cynic would say that the cops dont do this because it doesnt benefit them to do this, that attacks on pick pocketing of tourists isnt really something cops are going to attach any priority to, that its sort of condoned !!

Its easy to see how it can be stopped or reduced, but tourists being robbed is like jetskis demanding damages.. Its part of whats acceptable to Patongs locals.

It's not only ladyboys at it though. Last night I got followed home by a Thai man and woman on a bike. I live right at the end of a cul de sac and as I was getting off my bike they came up and stopped near me called me over and the guy made out he was asking me for a light for a cigarette. As I don't smoke I said no and walked away. I had the feeling if I was pissed and vulnerable they would have tried to mug me but thought best not to when they saw I was sober.

Chatting with a mate today who was down in London on Friday for a job interview, reckons he was 'dipped' at Kings Cross Railway station. Credit cards, ID Cards, money. Had to get a bus to the interview as opposed to a taxi. What seemed to piss him off the most was the loss of his return ticket home. Had to pay (or his Missus did!) about 80GBP one-way after the interview.

He made the final three and has to go back again on Wednesday, reckon he'll be a bit more alert next time through Kings Cross.

PHUKET: -- In advance of the arrival of two more US Navy ships full of marines ready for R&R in Phuket this week, Kathu Police are cracking down on criminal gangs of ladyboys.

Kathu Police Commander Grissak Songmoonnark said last time a large contingent of US Navy sailors were in Phuket around 80 ladyboys were arrested for petty crime.

About half of them came to the island from Pattaya with the intention of robbing the Americans, Col Grissak said.

Police would be checking their ID and employment cards, he said. Those who didn’t have the right papers “would have problems”.

Tomorrow, 300 US Navy Marines will arrive aboard the USS Ingraham.

On Thursday they will be joined by around 3,000 more aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard.

The crew have been training in East Timor and have been on board their ship for the past month in advance of their Phuket visit.

Douglas H Robinson, chief of Naval Security Force Protection Detachment, met with Col Grissak and representatives from around 60 Patong businesses in Kathu Police Station to discuss the upcoming visit.

Only 2,500 marines would be allowed off the ships on any given day, Mr Robinson said.
