Eh. Given the choice between taking someone at their word and calling them a liar, it costs me nothing to accept the first.

Besides, doing the math, it might be plausible.

Figure about a thousand bucks a month to live, v. cheaply, featuring a crappy apartment with at least one roommate (~$500/mth), no car ($75/mth for a buspass, or less), cheap food (~$100/wk). That's doable, though it leaves very little leeway if something goes wrong. It also assumes no addictions, whether those are nicotine, alcohol, or something stronger.

Add another $2000/mth for his hobby.

$3000 / 30 days a month means he needs to come up with $100 a day. More likely he won't be out bottle-picking and panhandling every day, so you're probably looking at getting $130/day or so. Is that doable?

Maybe. There's no tax, at least. Figure the deposit on a bottle or can averages out to .10 a piece, and you're looking at 1300 bottles or cans a day. That, at least, is not reasonable to me. I figure he'd have to be pulling in at least half his daily income panhandling, and probably a good chunk more.

I find the mechanics of poverty really interesting, so I end up thinking about this kind of stuff fairly often. I've tried to do a study on the relative economics of day temp labour, construction temp work, swamping, and bottle picking/panhandling, but it's really challenging to get good numbers, particularly given the whole "I have a job that eats up most of my time" issue.

So if I could get real, actual numbers from a bottle picker/panhandler, that would be great! (Probably not as much fun as getting laid, though.)

i saw two guys on quads picking bottles up the "willow Creek rd." near Hinton a few years back and they said it takes them between a week to 10 days to do a 45 km stretch(up to the Jack Wright, i think) both sides. not sure how much they made that year but buddy said the time before that, they split about $4300. not a bad haul. and that was before pop cans went up to $0.10. but i'm sure there weren't too many coke cans, mostly pil, bud and kokanee. righands...will they ever learn???
