Learning difficulties/reflexology

Any advice please. Will be giving a reflexology treatment this week to someone with learning difficulties at college. I have been off for the past two weeks due to my mum-in-law passing away and still feel very fragile. Not sure if Im in the right frame of mind to give a good treatment to anyone. Was only told about it yesterdayand college is to-morrow.Just dont want to let the client down.

Im hoping to find my tutors email address to vent my concerns but it doesnt help knowing she told us she doesnt tend to check her emails very often hmmmm

Hi,
Im sorry to hear about your mother in law...and to be told at the last minute your working on someone with learning difficulties....but it might be just want you need? I get such a buzz out of given a treatment that some times i think it heals me at the same time...
With regards to the treatment... I would just take it slow try not to bog them down with lots of information and just go with the flow.....just look at it as more experience.

Speak with your tutor on the day im sure you will be fine...

I've taught students with learning difficulties and in my experienceit's important to remember that each individual isjust a human being with different needs. Just give a treatment with the healing intent that you would normally give to anyone and you will be fine.

Yes of course your right and I would do that. However, I think the Head of our course will be assessing us too...soooo that doesnt help.Think just with whats being goingn on in my life at min, confidence has been knocked. Still its all part of the learning curve I suppose and hopefully both the client and myself will benefit.

I am sorry to hear about your loss.

I am studying reflexology too. I lost my husband at the beginning of May, and didn't do any treatments for 6 weeks. The first one I did was very difficult,perhaps because I left it so long. I found myself wishing thatI hadn't stopped.

So my advice would be to do the treatment, but do share your feelings with your tutor. After allshe isthere to support you through your course. My tutorwas wonderful.

It helped me to start doing the treatments again, but I couldn't 'feel' anything other than a pair of feet. It upset me because I thought I'd lost my touch. It took a week or two to come back; it's still not quite right. It's difficult to put this experience into words, but I hope you can sort of understand what I mean.

Just wondered how things are going?

Sorry to hear about what happened - take things very slowly and do what feels right for you, you need to feel strong to treat others, equally, treating others may make you strong, only you can be the judge of that.

Treating people with learning difficulties.. my first client having started up in business was at a day care centre for people with learning difficulties. I hadn't ever treated anyone with learning difficulties before and had 5 people to treat. I was terrified! I got there, did the treatment and flew out of the place ona high, amazing experience, I still go there weekly and have to say it has been ans remains my my exhilarating work to date. Just love it.

How the will respond will depend on the severity and nature of the problem. If their condition is severe, or if they are non-verbal, it can feel a bit overwhelming, but look for body language, they will tell you what they want - it can be very much on their terms, if they aren't in the mood, they wont give you their feet - they may, however, want a hand treatment. If you are unfortunate and they aren't in the mood, that's ok. Just be warm and chat with them and make them at ease, some people will need to get to know you first.

If you are able to phone the college and find out the nature of the illness,then I might be able to give you some more advice.

If you are up to it though, give it a shot, it's really nothing to worry about and unlike 'able bodied' folk, they will direct you as to what is right for them, the level of feedback can be exceptional and the relaxation you can give them second to none.
