I would much rather see well behaved young men with their fathers in an adult environment than have them running round on their own while their parents are out in bars or doing their own thing.

One of the genuine pleasures of being a parent is the occasions when you can introduce them to something that makes them feel part of your world and grown up. I love taking my son to new places and, having seen the reports here from parents who have done just that, will be very likely to take him to Thailand sooner rather than later.

Who on earth are you to say what constitutes a 'misjudgement' in somebody elses child rearing experience?

Is the 20yrs minimum (to enter a bar you dont work at) applicable to all drinking premises over there? Or do they have different rules for minimum age in restaurants etc?

Sure,kids are welcome in the bars,but that doen't mean they can buy booze.
As long as they are behaving,a couple of drinks whilst they are on holiday with you isn't a problem. Also,don't expect to see kids running riot around the bars whilst their parents get blotto,it just doesn't happen.

BTW,How is the leg now,got rid of the limp now I hope. Make sure to introduce yourself to Nicke in MTB,and he will point out the BMs to you.:cheers:

I did not see any under 18s in soi Eric, but one night in Love bar 2 swedish lads turned up. One was smoking a ciggie trying to look older than his delicate years of about 14, the other looked 16. They were soon shooed away by one of Geir's ladyboys.:biggrinlo

I would not think that the open beer bars will not allow tourists to drink their even if they are under 18 or 20 (at least not much).

Even more off-putting are parents bringing real young kids into the bars (I even have seen parents with their babies in a trolley). Please, if you had the mind to put children into this world, now it is time to face the music and stay with them back at your hotel and play on the beach.

At least in my opinion, a bar is definitely not a place ever to be seen by a kid (and it is no difference if it is 4 or 14), even in the most harmless manner. And obviously, what one could and will see in the bars in Phuket is definitely not harmless.

While I agree in practice its not a problem but the way I read it there would still be a law broken.

I wonder if the law is 'to drink in a bar' or 'to enter a bar' ?? As a place like scruffys where people may attend as a family in the lunch period etc would clearly be breaking thier license.

With the way backstabbing in the biz community goes and the way successful farang businesses often get unfair competition in that way it just leaves them open to problems.

Another "grey" area I guess Sefton. I can only relate my own experiences in the bars. I suppose one point being is how old do the kids look may come into it. We all know that the girl who may look 18/19 may only be 14/15 and this too could cause problems for the licensee if the letter of the law is imposed.

My daughter (Sarah,16) has been with me to Patong two times the last year. She likes to go out with me in the evenings and sometimes she also buy herself a drink, like Strawberry Daquirie, Baileys, Bacardi Breezer.........., but she has never been asked about her age or ID in the bars. Maybe she look's older than a tg on her age, but for sure not as old as 20.

Wasn't a very well put question on my behalf, but pubs which serve proper food in the UK do have exemptions to the 18yrs minimum age in the actual bar area for various reasons.
Was wondering if there is are similarities to Thailand in this respect.

My underlying thoughts to the matter was....kids running riot around the bar/s area....You read between the lines well!!
I appreciate your reassurance, that this is does not happen.
As for my injuries....I still have a limp & I'm undergoing physio & having a couple of hydrotherapy sessions a week in the pool. I am on the improve.
I will be at Nicke's for sure.....Don't take that as a threat, just a promise 5555

Sorry mate but I can not agree with you. I have taken my children to bars in Patong and it is my business and nobody else's. My children are always supervised, well behaved, not drinking alcohol and just sit and play games with BG's. My view is that children need to grow up in the real world and not be wrapped up in cotton wool. I would not take them into GoGo bars though.

I can see your point of view,but have to disagree slightly.
At what point do you consider a child becomes an adult? There are many occasions where a 14yr old can be a mature and sensible person and well behaved in a bar without raising an eyebrow. Oppose that with a stupid 18yr old off his head with drink and acting like an idiot. Which one would you have sitting next to you? (OK neither:biggrinlo )
I quite agree that anyone under the age of say 13 shouldn't be in a bar,but for me,if they are sat quietly sipping a coke and chatting to their parents,I don't see a problem.
As for what is seen in bars,I don't think I have seen anything too outrageous in Soi Eric at the bars that I wouldnt want my 15yr old to see. Its all part of growing up and learning. But I respect anyone point of view on this,we don't all think alike .

Depends on the bar.. some bars are notorious for being a little over the top.. I as a person in those bars dont want to have children around. Bars where a Kateoy might get undressed in, A bar girl might have her kit off, sexual antics that do happen.

I dont want kids under 14 or 15 seeing that kind of thing, sets a bad example and makes me change my behavior which I shouldnt have to do in an adult only environment.

I am not anti children and I am not even anti children in bars with adults (lunchtime in a pub beer garden is perfectly suitable) if its the right kind of bar.. A bar with obvious sex for sale (and thats not all beer bars) and bar top strippers is not where pre pubescent kids should be..

As there is food available in Scruffy's they would be get away with it. In more controlled places like agogo's they would not. It always amazes me how many fathers try to bring there young sons into agogo's, they are mostly European so I guess its a totally different cultural thing. They get pretty pissed off when asked to leave or denied entry.

kids in bars, well as LIL said depends on the bar, some of the quiet laid back bars, the bgs make a real fuss of the children and play the games with them.

did not take my neices to any bars, only their father.
when my 13 and 15 year old neices were in patong i got questioned if the girls they could see at the resturant with farang were prostitutes i confirmed that some were and some were not.
so while their father and i sat watching the football they played whos a bg and customer and who is not.
