Length of time for an IHM treatment

Hi,

Can I ask how long people take to do their Indian head massage treatments please?

I can't seem to take any longer than 25 minutes (excluding consultation) and I'm doing all the moves I have in my course notes. My tutor suggested slowing down but even when I did, I still think 30 mins was the longest I've spent on a case study.

If you spend much longer, would you be able to let me know what moves you do?

I've been doing some research on local practitioners and one of them offers up to 60 mins! What are they doing in that time?!

I spend about 15 mins on the back and shoulders (usually lots of tension here so worth spending time on); 5 - 10 minutes on neck, shoulders and arms; 10 minutes head and 5 - 10 minutes face.

So really I average about 40 - 45 minutes for a full treatment.

I can do a 30 minute quickie treatment (if time is short and for tasters) by breaking it down into 10 minutes back; 5 minutes neck, shoulders, arms; 10 minutes head and 5 minutes face.

During a full treament I usually pause and rest my hands on the chakra or area I'm working on and concentrate on mine and my client's breath for a few moments. I find it very relaxing for the client and it helps me to get my breath and focus back

On the back I pause on the heart chakra.
On the shoulders I pause by resting my hands on the shoulders.
On the head I pause and place a hand gently on the forehead and a hand supporting the occipital and focus on the brow chakra.
Also, I pause with both hands resting on the crown chakra.
On the face I cup my hands, very gently,under the chin and focus on the throat chakra and finally rest my hands across the forehead to focus on the brow chakra.

To finish I rest my hands yet again on the crown and finally on the shoulders at which point I gently speak to my client to indicate the session is over. At this point I usually feel very relaxed, energised and ready for my next client.

These are just some ideas I find work for me, but you will probably develop your own ways of working

The routine on my VTCT course consisted of 33 moves in total and take 25-30 mins. I am thinking of offering 30 and 45 min. treatments now I am qualified. To stretch it out, I would add in more effleurage between moves eg more circular moves round scapula during back an shoulder. Also add in pressure points of scalp, not in VTCT course, but demonstrated in Helen McGuinness DVD. Some extra moves on face, again picked up from research in books and on DVD. Chakra balancing as demonstrated in Narendra Mehti DVD. Some routines do then return to neck and shoulders at the end, which is a possibility, but doesn't feel right to me......

Hope this gives some ideas. I would be interested to hear advice from others on longer routines.

My IHM usually take 30 minutes, although you can stretch it out to 40 mins by adding some further massage on the shoulders and scalp.

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments. I've tried a few of the suggestions and have extended my treatment time. I also think I was just generally too quick so have slowed down my movements, giving a more relaxed massage to my clients.

Hi, i was taught that an indian head massage should last 45 minutes. I mean i find it a struggle sometimes but i just slow my movements down.
was anyone els taught it was to last 45 minites?

My training for IHM recommended 40 minutes but sometime I seem to finish in 30! Something I do is just some Reiki hand positions over the face and ears/head, etc if I need a bit more time and the client usually finds it relaxing as well.

On my VTCT course we were taught to do it in 35 minutes. This included balancing the Chakras at the end of the treatment which know isn't taught on all courses. Funny how much it varies.

I'm sure you have had more than enough answers by now, but my IHM was taught to last 40 minutes. It tends to end at about 35 minutes but I add a bit of Reiki at the end. Also, if someone has particularly bad knots in their shoulders I will spend longer there so it is definitely 40 minutes.
