The torrent itself is just a little file saying on which pc's the real file is located and a lot of other info, you need a bittorrent client to get the actual file.
I use Azureus but Shareaza would also suffice, Shareaza has the more normal p2p program look to it and will also connect to Gnutella1+2 as well as Edonkey, enabling searches for whatever material.

Shareaza will work for downloads.
I must mention that Azureus require java from Sun, also available on the homepage. All can be found fairly easy through google.
