So the masks protect you from air pollution in Asian countries but not someone else's droplets? Looks like these so-called experts on TV didn't think before speaking. At this point I really don't care what the true purpose is after a year of mixed messaging. I don't have use for these diapers unless I feel I do at a given time.

I did know this but I think a lot of people do not. They think they are invincible because they are wearing a mask. I think it was better before the mask mandate came in and they limited the number of people in the store. Once they mandated the masks it was a free for all. The other thing I have a problem with the whole mask thing, is as you mentioned it is not to protect the user but to protect others from the user, but if the user is not sick then wearing a mask or not wearing a mask, there is no difference. So my assumption is anyone wearing a mask is sick as they are the only ones who can transmit the disease. And people look at me strange for not wearing a mask when in reality they are the ones who are sick and wearing a mask so they do not pass it along.

I don't think I worded it properly. Honestly, my comment was questioning this idea that masks don't protect the people wearing them but rather the ones they come in close contact with when people living in Taiwan wear these same masks to protect themselves from smog. It just doesn't add up to me. People wear toques for their head, gloves for their hands, sunglasses for their eyes and all other types of gear to protect them from "outside forces" that may be harmful to certain parts of the body. Why is a mask any different? How come it can't protect you from another person's droplets?

Because owing to its small size a virus penetrates a fabric mask more easily than smog particles. If you want to get technical, a surgical style mask doesn't do a great job of protecting against smog either, but it diminishes the amount of garbage you're breathing. N95 style masks are different. They do protect the wearer because when worn correctly they form a seal against the face and have a filter.

Mask wearing has now (ridiculously) become a political issue, so good luck finding one clear authoritative opinion, but I'm of the view that they've probably been of a slight benefit and slowing down the spread of disease. I'd guess the social distancing has done much more.

My attempt at being facetious. If a mask only protects others not the user, then only the sick should wear the mask to prevent passing on the sickness.

Then I'm glad I've worn the mask for my own protection. There are other factors that may actually cause me harm so why not put it on? I sure as hell have saved 0 lives. No illnesses or existing conditions for me but hey, let's just assume that we do because the mask mandate assumes that we're all potential grandma killers.
