Massage Envy
A client of mine winters in AZ and was a Massage Envy member. He had found a good therapist there and was pleased with the work he recieved and then... she moved on. He never really found another therapist at Massage Envy that he clicked with and eventually found another therapist who has her own private practice in the area that he now goes to.
I think that what Massage Envy offers is newbie therapists a chance to get their feet in the door to this profession. I can't imagine that the therapists are making very much $ if the fee is $29/session (even with the company charging a 'membership fee')? I know what my monthly overhead is and cannot fathom staying in the black while charging $30/hr!!!
This to me sounds similar to the spa and chiro environment that alot of therapists choose to start out in, but move on when they learn that they are talented and can 'do it on their own' or work for a higher %/$ amt. I imagine that Massage Envy has a high rate of therapist turn-over (I have no real proof, just a hunch).
Talented therapists can make good money if they know their worth, and there are many picky clients out there that want to recieve quality therapy sessions with skilled/experienced therapists.
Granted, there will always be people that are looking for the cheapest price going, and as far as I'm concerned, with rare exception, you tend to get what you pay for (be it a student clinic or a cheap massage).
Enough people know this, why go you think people drive BMW's and Cadillacs when there are KIA's & and Ford Escorts on the car lot? Do you think that the high end resturant in your town/city is worried about the new McDonalds moving in? How about that high end clothing store, do you think that they lose sleep over people buying clothes at Wal-Mart? I know, this oversimplifing the analogy, and yes, there is a chance that some people will be lured to a cheaper service, but it is really a chance for you to look at what you offer & how you service your clientelle, do you give it that little extra? Are you constantly looking for ways to improve what you have to offer? Are you really treating your clients like the are your lifeblood for your business? If you answer YES and can give your clients the results that they are looking for in their sessions, I wouldn't say that you don't have anything to worry about, but chances are when someone (ANYONE) comes in and undercuts your prices, you'll probably make out OK.
This also reminded me of a similar discussion on this board:
