Mini-rant, want opinions...

Around here, a very basic rate for newbies is minimum $50.00. But then the economy here is probably higher all around. Seems to me that $40.00 is not unreasonable at all, and lowering your rate brings you down to a level of competition over price, rather than quality.I like the idea of calling your own place. You get an idea of how they are promoting you, and how they deal with comments over price. Knowing what the market is doing is always a good idea as well.I would definitely save the stick as a last resort.... 8)

As with everyone else that posted, I agree your price is more than fair. Our wellness center does a 60 min. massage for $60.00 That is median price for WI. Generally runs from $50.00 to 75.00 non spa  per hour. I think reception should be coached to deliver a selling massage message, such as instead of answering to the cost of an hour massage, she could say instead," Our therapist incorporates many different specialties such as, reflexology, MF release, TP therapy, etc. to achieve relaxation and relief of tight muscles. He meets with you before hand to customize an optimal treatment so you get positive  personalized results!" Really, reception can make or break you. If they don't put forth the effort and enthusiasm, you may lose a potential client.

Seforum.xxxg~I also agree with what everyone has said so far.The one thing that kept going through my head as i read the responses was, you are ONLY charging $5 more, right? Then really, what is the big deal? I don't think that $5 s enough of a difference for her to be concerned over. It you were $20 higher, then I could see where she might want to speak to you about it, but even then, she knew what you charged before you came there.Bottom line, and I know you know, but I'll say it anyway..... she gets her rent no matter what, and you charging $40 (which IS very low!) $35, or $100 for an hour is better than her having an empty room that isn't bringing her extra income.

I jumped from $50/hr to $65/hr in 6 months. I got more clients!  Go figure. So, you could call 2 places and tell her you called around, plus did some more research (here), if you choose to placate her. I agree that you have to engage the client more after just quoting the price. A lot of people call with that question. Perhaps they want more information than that, but don't know what to ask.It's makes it more difficult when your landlady thinks she's your boss, huh?
