misplaced clavicle

i havent personally spoken to my client.

she called today to cancel her next apptmnt. she stated something didnt feel right after her last massage. She went to the DR. the next day who informed her she has a "misplaced clavicle" caused from the massage. This was 3 wks. ago. She has been getting PT. 3X a week.

I have seen her three times. I have given her the same massage each time per her request. She is in her 60's. I dont recall her saying anything amiss after her last apptmnt. I dont "work" on her hard, but she does enjoy a deeper, firm relaxing massage. I dont see how this could have happened. I do a little bit of arm stretches, but they are gentle pulls.

I feel so upset. Has this happened to anyone?

If the doctor said misplaced, I'd be thinking she needs a new doctor. A REAL doctor.....

I have never heard of a massage doing that. If the massage dislocated it, she should be checked for other issues, such as hypermobility of the ligaments. Something is wrong, and I doubt it was the massage. She wouldn't have felt that something wasn't quite right *after* the massage - that would have been a PAINFUL experience, to have the clavicle dislocated!!!

I would wonder whether this was an actual dislocation or what? You'd have to use a lot of force to dislocate a clavicle wouldn't you?

Have you spoken with/seen any documentation from the doctor? "misplaced clavicle" doesn't sound like an actual diagnosis to me. :-D

I would be quite alarmed if I heard this about a client. Do keep us posted.

I would require documentation from the doctor that he felt it was caused by the massage.
I would also document my soap notes, and all that I could remember of the last session and call up my professional organization to see how best to proceed... it's always good to CYA.
That being said, it sounds to me like there are some other issues at play here.

The amount of pressure needed to dislocate a clavicle would create a lot of pain (immediate, not later) and I would imagine that there would be significant bruising and swelling.

On the lighter side of things....when I read the title of this thread and saw "Misplaced Clavicle" I just had to chuckle. I had the image of someone running around the house (sans clavicle) going...."now where did I put my breastbone...I had it just the other day"

I had the same mental image! :-D

We had a great chiro in Southern California who had a patient that had his clavicle removed due to illness or injury or something. Anyway - He went in for regular adjustments obviously. This guy could almost touch his shoulders together in the front! It was SO cool. He would come out of the adjustment room and push his shoulders together and say, "Don't let him touch you, Man! Don't let him touch you!"

Thank you for your replies. When asked if the doc said "displaced", the client said "no, he said it was just Misplaced and that its common from getting a massage". She seems like someone who has great faith in ther doctor ...

I cant find medical term "misplaced clavicle"....I think something else was going on, probably unknown cause so the doctor told her something that sounded plausible to her and he could prescribe a treatment for her peace of mind (and possibly some $$ for him ?).

This happens to my elderly mom all the time. She has vague ailments. If a doctor says, well I dont really know what it is, you could try physical therapy for 6 weeks to see if it goes away", she comes home very upset b/cus "those doctors dont know anything!" But if the doctor says, "well, it sounds like you have such-and such, I'd like you to have physical therapy for 6 weeks and we'll go from there" she comes home very pleased that she might have "blah-blah".

Ugh. I have that happen, too - doctors around here are VERY disrespectful towards their elderly patients, and say the stupidest things. I can only guess it is to appease them and yep, to make money. I once had a client come in saying she has bursitis in her hamstring.....the doctor said so!! At least he didn't blame the massage.

A misplaced clavicle is common from getting a massage????? You'd think someone would have told US that!! :roll:

I agree with much of what has already been said.

"Misplaced" is sort of a funny term; I giggled too I guess "displaced" is slightly more accurate. There IS a such thing as a partial dislocation, which would produce mild symptoms--sometimes the patient doesn't even realize it. The term for it is subluxation, and I guess it can happen to practically any joint, even tooth sockets, theoretically (shrugs... have never seen it, but have heard of it.) Anyway, this is something for a DO or a DC; they're great at taking care of this stuff. And no, I HARDLY think it was caused by a massage! LOL That statement would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad...and by sad I mean the fact that someone with supposedly so much education would make a statement like that in all seriousness. LOL!
